A Short Story with Two Halves
Susan Fraser lives her life in the background. Shy, plain, soft-spoken, the kind of woman who blushes her way through a Friday shift at the doctor’s clinic and counts the minutes until she can go home. Her best friend Nicole is the opposite in every measurable way: outgoing, confident, gorgeous, the woman a room rearranges itself around.
They have everything in common. They are, in a way neither of them can fully explain, each other — reflections in a funhouse mirror. Susan keeps her hair pulled back in a tight bun and hides behind dark blue eyes. Nicole wears long, platinum waves and crystal blue, and knows exactly what she looks like naked. They look like sisters. They look nothing alike.
Then, on Susan’s birthday, a charming blue-eyed man with a knife and a plumber’s van takes the one thing she never gave him. Susan is a virgin. She bleeds, she hides it, she says nothing — because he told her he’d kill her if she talked.
But Susan isn’t the one who does the talking.
Nicole is not a virgin. Nicole is not afraid. And Nicole has four weeks, a gentleman’s club, a borrowed dress, and a very specific plan.
Told in two parts — one in Susan’s whispering voice, one in Nicole’s roaring one — By Any Other Name is a lean, bloody, blackly funny revenge story about what a woman will do for the other woman.
Lightly illustrated. Contains graphic sex and genuinely gruesome act of violence. Adult, but it isn’t erotica.
