For seven years the Walkers could do no wrong. Then the ground shifts. A glittering investment trust turns out to be a pyramid of lies, and one of Caleb’s oldest partners from the moving-crew days loses everything to it. A brother-in-law gambles away a fortune on a river steamboat. A friend who stood beside Caleb at the fruit stall throws his life away over another man’s wife.
And then the fever comes. It starts quietly in Riverport and spreads down the rail lines, closing schools, emptying shops and turning every crowded street into a risk. Rival companies cut wages and close their doors. Caleb makes a promise that sounds like madness: no one on his payroll will take a pay cut, whatever it costs him.
The Golden Ledger has changed too. It no longer pays in dollars, only in luck, and Caleb spreads every of it over the people he loves, hoping it is enough to keep them standing until spring.
