By 1878 the money has a life of its own. Caleb Walker’s picture-card company turns ordinary girls into stars overnight, and his youngest daughter becomes a sensation by accident, beloved across the country as “Little Smarty” before she can read a contract. His eldest is old enough to start a charity of her own. His baby son is timid enough to be bossed around by every little girl in the nursery.
Outside the nursery, things are less gentle. A cousin stands on a bridge and threatens to jump unless the family pays up. A suitor’s mother insults the Walkers to find out what price they’ll pay for a match. Crooked circuits cook the box-office books, and the theatrical company fills up with pretty faces who can’t act, protected by a ruthless heiress who is happy to cross swords with Clara herself.
Caleb’s answer is not the one anyone expects. He takes his girls into the hills, rewrites the family’s rules, and clears out his own company from top to bottom, betting that a family and a business are built the same way: by refusing to reward the wrong things.
