Evan built an empire that could grow back. Now his enemies have found a way to kill it at the roots.
As the Mycelial Sovereign, Evan commands a living network of fungal warriors. Fallen soldiers can return in new bodies. Stolen skills become upgrades for his next generation of monsters. With his System and an army he can redesign, every battlefield is a chance to make his empire stronger.
But the Demon King has been studying the thing that makes Evan so dangerous.
A weapon that devours mycelium threatens the network holding his civilization together. Dwarven legions are tearing up his borders. And the Mist is sweeping inland, dragging entire fortresses into deadly worlds shaped by memory. Evan can send an army into the fog. Getting it back is another matter.
Protecting his people means fighting on several fronts while building creatures that can survive what his enemies throw at them. One stolen boss ability can turn a mushroom soldier into a monster large enough to blot out the sky. Convincing that monster to stop admiring its own heroism is a separate problem.
The bigger his monsters become, the bigger the targets they make.
Beyond the battlefield, the contest for Ancient Dragon power is nearing its end. Divine artifacts offer advantages no amount of ordinary leveling can match. If Evan lets those powers fall into the wrong claws, even his largest creations may not be enough.
Devour or Be Devoured is Volume 14 of They Wanted a Hero. They Made a Monster, a LitRPG progression fantasy series combining monster evolution, empire building, dark fantasy warfare, and ruthless problem-solving with a wicked sense of humor.
Evan knows how to turn an enemy's strength into his own.
But when the enemy learns to feed on his empire, what will he have to become to keep it alive?
