Christine lives for the painting.
Every day she stands before the easel, refining the same scene: a pale, golden-haired woman in a sheer gown reclining in a green field under a great willow tree. A second figure, darker and half-hidden, leans over her, one hand stretched toward her throat. The proportions must be perfect. The light must be dusk, not day. The expression must capture both distraction and vulnerability.
She has painted the scene dozens of times. Rejected canvases lean against the walls of her small apartment. Mail piles up unread. Friends stop calling. The outside world fades into background noise while the image in her mind grows sharper, more insistent.
At night the painting follows her into sleep. She stands barefoot in dew-soaked grass. The sky darkens. Something moves nearby. A voice speaks. A presence draws closer—strange, intense, and strangely familiar. In the dream the boundaries of reality loosen. Touch feels real. Desire feels absolute.
By day she returns to the canvas, chasing a perfection that always slips just out of reach. The more she works, the more the two worlds—art and dream—begin to bleed into each other. The willow tree outside her window looks different. A mark appears on the floor outside her door. The shadowed figure in the painting seems to breathe.
Still Life is a story of artistic obsession, erotic longing, and the thin membrane between creation and the forces that answer when we call too deeply.
