Evan Reed reads rooms for a living.
A former medical researcher turned wedding photographer, he sees the truth two metres to the left of where everyone else is looking: the father's hesitating hand, the bride gripping her bouquet too tightly, the grief hiding inside a laugh. What he can't do is stay inside his own life. He under-charges, over-edits, and leaves every room the second someone might actually see him.
Then a photography conference in Prague puts him on a stage he never wanted, in front of the one audience trained to look back.
Sofia Duarte is a photographer with a half-finished dream and no patience for men who make themselves smaller. She watches Evan give the most honest talk of his life, and afterward she says the thing he spent forty slides trying not to:
"You said it was about editing."
"Mostly."
"No. I think you meant fear. You just gave it a workflow."
Over three days they keep finding each other: a styled shoot where he photographs the truth around the lie, a stolen lunch on a low wall, a cellar party that reaches his body before his mind can object, a hotel room with the curtains half open to the rooftops. Evan takes three photographs of Sofia. Colleague. Then desire. Then morning. Somewhere between the dancing and the light coming through the window, for the first time in years, he stops leaving the room.
Available Light is a quiet, sharp love story about attention as both a wound and a gift. Evan has an ADHD mind that only goes still when a room is fast enough to hold it, and Sofia has no interest in being photographed as anything but true. It is funny in places, tender in others, and honest about how frightening it is to be wanted when you have spent your life making yourself easy to overlook.
For readers who like their romance literary, their desire real, and their happy endings earned instead of handed over.
