This story was originally written for a contest that involved the use of nine story cubes that threw up topics at random. I was given the following cubes

1. Thought bubble – the ability to read thoughts
2. Magnet
3. Abacus – shown to represent numbers
4. Key
5. Parachute
6. Aeroplane
7. Spear
8. Tower
9. Monster

You had to use at least five, but I ended up using all nine, although in a different order from the list. The cubes themselves are shown on the front cover.

The story deals with a brother and sister who lost their parents during COVID. He is Special Forces, and she is a brilliant ancient civilisation expert. They go to the volatile Middle East seeking an ancient treasure. What they find reveals that their love for each other goes beyond what society normally accepts.
