Feels off, inconsistent

I really enjoyed "A Fresh Start", but this sequel feels off and inconsistent with the first one.
It certainly has its moments, but there is a jarring pattern that whenever Amber and the protagonist are "pushing boundaries", it will soon be followed by: "oh, by the way, she and Joe have been doing that for a long time". That would be perfectly okay if it had been hinted at earlier, but the way it's handled here feels like a lazy surprise that lessens the emotional impact of what you just read. While the premise is still interesting, I'm not sure if I want to read another book like this.
