“You quit again? What the fuck, Sally-Anne! That’s the second job this month. How are you gonna contribute to bills if you can’t hold down a job?”
Pa was really mad. He was hollering at me from just an arm’s length away, spittle flying from his lips. He was fit to be tied when I came home early from my job at the gas station. I tried sneaking in the door, but he was always around and watching for intruders, when he wasn’t watching my younger sister, Lulu. She didn’t need watching, but he kept his greasy eyes on her anyways, and sometimes his hands, too.
Pa tried that with me a few years ago, starting when I was Lulu’s age, or maybe younger. When I filled out at 19, he started staring at my boobs. I took to wearing loose sweatshirts, and never wore a tight top again. The last time he’d stared, I told him I’d pour sugar in his gas tank if he looked at me like that again, and he laid off. He loved that car more than me, it seemed. Lulu started getting her figure around the same age, too, and Pa noticed. The women in our family were late bloomers, said Ma, but when we did, we bloomed big. Big boobs, big hips, big ass. Not a model figure, we were too full everywhere for that, but we weren’t huge, either. It sure got us a lot of attention, but neither me nor Lulu wanted any part of it. We’d talked about that a few times, and we both felt that if boys didn’t notice us before, when we had no figures, they obviously didn’t care about us as people. They just wanted to bury their faces in our tits. We were happier keeping out of all that, so neither of us had ever dated.
I just wanted to get a job that would let me move out. Pa said it wasn’t right for a girl to live on her own. He said either I lived with family, or a husband.
He couldn’t stop me, though. If I hid enough money, I’d move across town and he couldn’t do nothing about it. I’d take Lulu with me too, if I could.
I never understood why Ma didn’t step in. She saw Pa trying to feel up Lulu and said nothing. I tried asking her once, and she muttered something about needing a break from it herself. She was a cold-hearted mother, I realized. My family, aside from Lulu, were nothing but a disappointment; selfish and disgusting. Lulu’s twin, Luke, wasn’t any better. He stayed out a lot, either with the guys on his football team or sleeping his way through all the cheerleaders. When Lulu would cry out to him for help the odd time he was home, he just laughed. Lulu tolerated a lot more than I did, though, and confessed that she didn’t see how she could get out from under Pa’s thumb, so she may as well let him do what he wanted. He didn’t try that with her when I was around, though. He knew I’d step in and tell him off.
I applied everywhere I could in our town, but there weren’t a lot of jobs for someone with just their high-school diploma. I had the grades to get into college, just barely, but Ma and Pa wouldn’t let me go. I didn’t get any scholarships, so even if I stayed home, I’d be struggling to pay for tuition. Ma and Pa had no money to help out, even if they wanted to. What little they had went towards Luke’s tuition. I think they wanted me trapped at home. My only hope was to find a decent job that didn’t need a degree or certificate, and get a place for me and Lulu, if I could convince her to leave.
That was proving harder than I thought. I’d had a dozen jobs over the last two years, plus a couple I’d held while in school, and I’d quit each one. Sometimes I lasted a few days, sometimes a couple of months, but they all ended the same way. My boss would try to grope me. Some of them held out for a while, just trying to talk me into going in the storage room or back home with them. One of them even brought me gifts, and gave me a raise. After a while, depending on their level of patience, they’d give up trying to convince me, and tried just taking what they wanted.
I’d get pulled into their office and bent over their desk, then they’d try to pull down my pants. They’d grab my boobs when I was in the lunch room making coffee, shoving me against the counter and mashing me with their rough hands while rubbing their gross hard-ons against my ass. One of them even shoved me against the staff lockers and crammed his hand down my pants to feel my pussy.
Every time, I shoved them off and quit on the spot. No job was worth getting groped, or maybe even raped. This town was full of disgusting men, and no girl was safe from their grasping hands. The cops were no help. They were just as grabby, maybe even more so.
I had to explain to Pa yet again why I’d quit.
“Pa, Mr. Jenkins was grabbing my ass every time he passed me. He said he was gonna fuck my ass whether I wanted it or not. I had to quit!” Why did I even bother trying to explain to Pa? He wasn’t a protective sort of father, who’d go knock the block off of any man who’d touch his little girl.
“Of course he grabbed your ass, Sally-Anne. You’ve got a backside any man would want to dig his hands and dick into. Maybe he’d even marry you and take you off my hands. You should beg for your job back and let him have whatever he wants.”
“Fuck, Pa, he’s married already. I’m not letting any man touch me without my say-so, especially not a boss. I’ll go looking for something else tomorrow.”
Pa looked thoughtful.
“I think what you need is a job where you can’t get away, and have to take what’s given to you. You need to get used to men’s hands on you. I have an idea. I’ll let you know tomorrow if it works out.”
How was that any better? I didn’t need to get used to it; I needed to not be manhandled. I dreaded what kind of idea Pa would come up with. It wouldn’t be anything good.
I started looking on-line for other jobs, but there wasn’t much available around here. I started to think maybe I’d have to take off for a bigger town, and maybe get some charitable shelter to take me in until I found a job.
I slept terribly, tossing and turning with worry.
When I woke up, I dressed in a maxi skirt and loose sweater. It was a bit too hot for a sweater, but I didn’t want anything clinging to my curves to draw men’s eyes. Not that it helped at any of the jobs I’d had. It was obvious I was full-figured no matter what, and a couple of my bosses even said that not knowing exactly what was under there was driving them crazy. I couldn’t win no matter what I did.
I came down to breakfast, and Pa and Luke were just finishing eating. They both looked at me with disturbingly happy grins on their faces.
“Sally-Anne, I found you a job. It’s the best situation you can expect. You’ll still be living with family, so you’ll have someone to look out for you, and you’ll have work.” I looked from Pa to Luke, not liking how easy this sounded.
“Grampa offered you a job at his junkyard. He says he’s getting busier and needs someone on the phone and dealing with taking payments. I’m taking you there right now. You’ll be living there, too, so pack your clothes. Don’t bother taking them pants, either. Just take dresses and skirts with tight tops. You don’t want to look like a slob.”
“What does it matter what I wear to answer phones? I don’t even own much like that, you know that, Pa!” I was confused and worried. Grampa lived on the other side of town, and we didn’t see him all that often. He was kept really busy at the junkyard, and after Gramma died, he didn’t come to too many family get-togethers. He looked a lot like Pa, being his father and all. Tall, with ropey muscles that made him look skinny, but I knew he was much stronger than he seemed. He had to heave around stuff in the yard all the time, and it made him tough and sinewy. Neither of them were any lookers, either. They had mean faces, heavily lined, and thin lips that rarely smiled unless it was something a normal person wouldn’t smile at. The last time I saw Grampa, about a year ago, he had come for Christmas, and his hair was getting white already. I knew he was Pa’s dad, but he couldn’t be more than 60. Working outside all the time had aged him, even though he looked tougher than ever. He had stared at me and Lulu the whole night, his eyes glued to our chests. Just like Pa.
“Go get some clothes from Lulu, then, and anything else you need, your grampa will have to get for you. He’s family, so he’ll take care of you, Sally-Anne. I’m giving you three minutes to pack what you need, then we’re heading out.”
I bolted for my room, grabbing a duffel bag out of my closet and stuffing it with underwear, bras, t-shirts and pajamas. I grabbed some skirts, all loose maxis that hid my legs, and a pair of trackpants in case I could talk Grampa into letting me wear them, plus a few pairs of shoes, my phone and a few books. I took my toiletries from the bathroom and ran to Lulu’s room, not even knocking. She was still in bed, and woke with a start. I told her what was happening, and she jumped up to help me grab a couple of dresses and tighter tops. There was no time to think of a plan to get out of this. I just hoped I had an opportunity to think of something once I was there.
Pa was already hollering for me to come down when I finished, the bag bulging open, and I ran down.
I went to the car, throwing the duffel in next to me in the back, and Pa and Luke sat in the front. We didn’t talk on the drive. When we got there, we drove in the open gate and parked near the office. The yard was full of piles of junk, sorted by type. Grampa took in all kinds of things, and people came from all over to find hard-to-find items that other people were getting rid of.
We went into the office, and Grampa was there, fiddling with something on the floor behind the desk. He stood up when he heard our footsteps, and his eyes went right to me, then slowly dragged up and down my body before he met my eyes and smiled. He was still a lecherous creep, which didn’t bode well for me working here, let alone living here. I tried to make myself small, pulling my shoulders in and turning away, but Pa put his arm around my shoulders and shoved me along to greet his dad.
“Here she is, Pop. Ain’t she filled out nice?” He hoisted one of my boobs up, jiggling it. I shoved his hand away, and he just laughed. “See, she needs to learn her place.”
I tried to get free of him, but he tightened his arm around my shoulders.
Grampa came up to me, and reached forward to circle my neck with his big hand. His callouses were scratchy, and he tightened just enough to hold me in place.
“Her place is under a man, and that’s where she’s gonna be. I’m happy to teach her. She’ll have to earn her keep here, Nat, and it ain’t gonna come cheap.”
My blood froze in my veins. I had to get away. This was so much worse than any of the jobs I’d had. I tried again to struggle out of their grips, but they were both strong and had no intention of letting me go.
“Please, Pa, I don’t want to stay here. Let me go.” Fear made my voice shake, and I grabbed Grampa’s wrist to try to pull his hand off my throat. He just smirked, and I gave up trying. Pa ignored me and addressed Grampa.
“She needs some proper discipline. Her ma and me have been way too easy on her, and you can see what the result is. She’s ungrateful for any attention a man gives her. She needs a stronger hand than mine. Plus, I got my hands full with Lulu. She’s a better daughter than Sally-Anne. She don’t push me away.”
Grampa looked deep into my eyes like he was trying to figure out what to do with me.
“Leave her with me, Nat. I’ll keep her and give her the discipline and training she needs. She’ll work here in the office, and live with me upstairs.” He let go of my neck, and cupped my cheek with his warm palm.
“Are you gonna be a good girl for me, Sally-Anne? I intend you keep you here for good, so you need to learn to be obedient. I’ll do whatever it takes to teach you to do that.”
I wasn’t sure how to respond. I had no intention of staying here, but if I told him that, he’d get mad, and then I don’t know what he’d do. Best to lie and go along with it for now, at least until Pa and Luke left.
“I’ll be good, Grampa.”
He patted my cheek.
“Glad to hear it, precious. Say goodbye to your pa and brother. I’ll make sure you get back to see your family at Christmas.”
Christmas! That was months away. I hated leaving Lulu in their clutches for that long. Escape was my only option, and once I got away, I’d have to hitch my way back home to grab Lulu and run.
Pa pulled me in for a hug, reaching down to grab my butt while he was at it. I shoved him off, but Luke was next, giving me a hug for the first time since he was a kid, and grabbing my butt just like Pa did. It was harder to shove him off, and he laughed in my ear when I tried.
Grampa surprised me by helping me out.
“Lay off her, Luke. She’s mine now. She don’t need your greedy hands on her.”
Luke let go, and he and Pa stood by the door. They didn’t move to leave, and looked like they were waiting for something.
Grampa grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the desk.
“Here you go, Sally-Anne. This is where you’ll be working. You’re gonna answer the phone and deal with customers paying and asking questions. I’ll teach all about that later. For now, you need to just have a seat and get accustomed to things.”
He pushed me into the chair, and I looked over the desk, pretending I intended to stay and actually work here. He ducked down next to me, and next thing I knew, I felt something click around my ankle. I looked down, and there was a shackle with a lock around my ankle, attached to a long chain that went to a ring bolted to the wall behind me. What in the heck? This gave new meaning to the term ‘shackled to my job’. He had literally chained me here. A chill ran down my spine.
I stood up, my chair falling back, and tried to back away from the desk. The chain was fairly long. I knew I was panicking and not thinking straight, but an instinctual urge struck, and I tried to run. I ran for the door, almost reaching it when the chain pulled tight, and Pa and Luke shoved me back towards Grampa.
Pa just laughed. “You were right, Pops. She tried to run. She’s not too bright. Looks like she’s good and captured. We’ll go and leave you to it.”
Luke smirked at me, and he and Pa left me there alone with Grampa.
Grampa held me from behind and shuffled me along back to the chair. I sat down, the shock of my situation clouding my thoughts. I couldn’t make sense of what was happening. I’d been left here with Grampa, chained to the office, and he said all kinds of disturbing, sick things about what he would do with me. The one phrase that rang in my head was that he intended to keep me here for good. I realized how naïve I was in thinking that I could escape. Grampa wasn’t stupid. He must have known I wouldn’t just give in, and would try to run.
The shackle on my ankle weighed heavy on me, the weight of my captivity making it feel like it weighed a ton. I felt Grampa’s hands on my face, and turned to look at him. He almost looked kind. That was a lie. He was a monster.
“Don’t w
