Hearing the jiggle of the door opening, Steven’s eyes unconsciously swiveled towards it and his breath hitched.
“—and I have half a mind to go up and him and tell him ‘hey you doofus, if it’s so easy do it yourself—’ Hey, Stevie? Earth to Stevie?”
A voice, coming from far away seemed to repeatedly call his name.
“Woah.”
Distantly, he noted that his friend blinked, and following his line of sight also turned to look at the vision of beauty which had entered into the coffee shop.
“Hot damn!” Jim said and a silent whistle left his lips, he nodded. “Yeah, I can see how that would be distracting,” his coworker said with a wry grin, and shaking his head turned back towards him.
“At any rate, what do you think? Should I do it?”
The brown-haired man blinked, and with not an inconsiderable amount of difficulty, tore his gaze and thoughts away from the pale blonde beauty, garbed in a plain blue blouse and a short skirt, which displayed her impressive cleavage and tantalizingly thick thighs.
His heart, and other parts of his body, felt like they were on fire. He gulped.
“Steve?”
“Yeah.”
“Should I, do it?”
He shook his head, “Nah, sounds like a bad idea to me. Our glorious overlord…sorry ‘manager’,” he said making air-quotes and drawing a snort out of his friend, “is an ass, yes. But we won’t be saddled with him for much longer, so no need to risk it. Just be patient.”
An annoyed exhale was his only answer for a long moment, “Yeah, you’re right.” His friend scowled for a few seconds before his visage brightened, a smile adorning his face. “Anyway, you’ve heard about the new game that just released? It’s a banger, you’ve got to play it!”
Steve rolled his eyes, “and I told you, your taste is atrocious, no way, no how am I touching anything you recommend.”
“What?! Why?”
“Remember the last movie you told me was and I quote, ‘finger-licking good’?” he deadpanned and his friend had the good decency to blush and lean back on his seat, avoiding his eyes.
“Yeah, errors may have been made there…” he said and a loud beeping made them both blink and startle.
Steve watched as the dark-skinned man fished out his phone from his jeans and paled.
“Oh shit! Sorry bro, gotta run! The Missus has cravings again!” the man said and started reaching for his wallet, Steven waved him away.
“Go, I got this.”
“Thanks bro!” the bald man said and all but dashed out of the shop. Leaving Steven alone with his thoughts and a half emptied and mostly cooled cup of Joe. He took a sip, seeking to calm his nerves and enjoy the taste of milk and sugar both. So, what if he liked his coffee a bit sweet, it’s not like it was a crime!
He knew that he should be thinking about work now, and yet, and yet his mind refused to leave the stacked blonde who sat with her back towards him but a few booths away.
Steven’s heart hammered in his chest and he could feel the faintest bits of perspiration starting to trail down his back. It would seem that his choice to wear a loose, black button up shirt for today had been an inspired one.
On his back, he could hear one of the waitresses thanking a pair of customers for their order and starting to walk towards the counter. He licked his lips and, with only the slightest tremble in his hands came to a decision.
“Excuse me?”
The blue-eyed brunette blinked and came to a stop with a smile.
“Yes, how can I help you, sir?”
He fidgeted in the soft cushions even as his throat, all of a sudden felt too dry.
“Who…who’s she?” he managed to rasp out, pointing with a finger towards the platinum haired beauty who oozed out elegance and whose head was half turned, looking outside and giving Steve but a glimpse of her full lips.
The girl blinked again, “Oh her? She’s Doctor Cynthia. A regular, not unlike yourself, sir.” The waitress said with a wink.
“Oh, how come I’ve never seen her before then?”
She shrugged.
“Dunno, luck of the draw, I guess? Although…she does tend to come in at odd hours, so there’s that, I suppose” the girl said and Steve could sense the budding energy building within the girl’s frame. “Anything else? Do you need me to get you something, perhaps?” she asked, her hand hovering over her notepad.
Steven shook his head with a smile, “No, I’m fine. And Maria?”
“Yes, sir?”
“Thanks. Oh, and drop the sir.”
“Not when I’m at work, sir~” she chirped and walked away with a skip on her step, making Steven shake his head with a smile. So, Cynthia, was it? He rapped his fingers on the polished wooden table, maybe…maybe he should go for it? After all, as Maria said, while the woman was, apparently, a regular. There was no guarantee that he would meet her again. Or that by then she wouldn’t be taken, if she wasn’t already.
And besides, if Jim was here, he’d urge him to go for it. Before nagging at him to hurry up and get hitched so that his wife would have someone to bond with, and more importantly stop bothering him.
A soft chuckle escaped his lips at the thought of his coworker and he glanced out the window and at the sun shining outside. Yes. This was for the best. Nodding to himself he climbed to his feet, his eyes fixed on the statuesque beauty’s back.
“Hi!”
The woman startled at his words, turning her head away from the window and the world outside, and turned to face him.
“Hello,” she said in a melodic voice and Steve beheld eyes of the deepest blue and the plushest, scarlet lips.
“Is this seat taken?” he asked with confidence he didn’t truly feel, pointing at the seat opposite of her and drawing a soft giggle out of the woman.
A giggle which made his jaw part and start heading towards the ground before he noticed and stopped it, for the way the woman’s cute button like nose twitched at her laugh or the way her thin eyebrows danced in merriment made him monetarily forget to breathe. The less
