Blooming In Season

“My goodness, you have such lovely hair,” said Kaylee’s mother as she ran a brush through her daughter’s hair.

“So what?” said Kaylee with a sigh as she glumly regarded her reflection in the mirror. “I’ll never be as pretty as the other girls at school.”

“Now honey, don’t say that,” said her mother with a little frown. “I told you before that every flower in the garden blossoms in its own season.”

“Yeah, well, not much blossoming going on here,” said Kaylee, using her hands to squeeze her breasts together to try and make them look bigger.”

“Stop that!” said her mother, giving her a little swat on the arm with a hairbrush. “Sooner or later, someone’s going to realize just how beautiful you are.”

“I guess,” said Kaylee with another sigh, turning to look back at her mother. “Hey, what’s Eric doing back here anyway? I thought he was off to college.”

“Your brother’s still going to classes, honey,” said her mother, continuing to brush Kaylee’s hair. “It’s just that, well, he wanted to save up some money. That’s all.”

“Save up for money for what?” said Kaylee, turning to look back at her mother.

“Oh, something foolish,” said her mother with a frown. “Anyway, it isn’t important. He’s family, and that’s all that matters.”

“I don’t get it,” said Kaylee, shaking her head. “If I could get out of this crummy town, I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

“Don’t worry about your brother,” said her mother, setting the brush down on the nightstand. “You get in bed, young lady. You’ve got school in the morning.”

“Fine,” said Kaylee, moping as she walked over to her bed and got under the blanket.

“There,” said her mother, giving her a kiss on her forehead. “Now you will have sweet dreams.”

“Yeah, right,” groused Kaylee, but a part of her wanted to believe her mother’s words.

***

A couple of days later, Kaylee spotted her brother unloading some boxes from the back of their mother’s car.

“What’s all that?” she said.

“None of your business, that's what,” said Eric, brushing past her on his way to the door leading down into the basement.

“Hey,” said Kaylee, following him down the steps. “Woah, you cleaned everything up down here.”

“Yeah, so?” said Eric, setting down a box on the old card table.

“So you never lift a finger to do any housework,” said Kaylee. “What’s going on?”

“I’m having a few friends over,” said Eric, taking out a rag and beginning to dust some shelves along the far wall.

“Wow! A party?” said Kaylee, her eyes lighting up. “Can I come?”

“It’s not a party,” said Eric. “I told you, it’s just some friends coming over to hang out.”

“Well, I wanna come,” said Kaylee as memories of her brother’s cute friends began popping into her mind’s eye.

“No way,” said Eric.

“Aww, why not?” said Kaylee. “That’s not fair.”

“You’re too young,” said Eric, brushing past her on his way to the stairs. “Plus, there’s gonna be alcohol and stuff.”

“And so what?” said Kaylee, trailing behind him. “I don’t care about drinking. I just want to hang out and have fun.”

“No, and that’s final!” said Eric, whirling to face Kaylee. “I want to have a good time, not have my little sister bugging everybody with her stupid questions.”

“You're the stupid one!” retorted Kaylee, sticking out her tongue at Eric.

Eric just ignored her, however, too focused on bringing in the supplies from the car. When Kaylee went to tell her mother about the grave injustice about to be perpetrated in the basement, she was shocked by her mother’s indifference.

“Look, he’s older now, honey,” said Kaylee’s mother, looking up from the bills she had spread out on the kitchen table. “I’m not a big fan of all the drinking, but that’s just what grown-ups do.”

“Aww, c’mon,” said Kaylee, stamping her feet. “The party is gonna be in our basement. He doesn’t have the right to tell me I can’t go.”

“Sweetie, why don’t you run along and watch a movie or something, hmm?” said her mother. “I’ve got to get these bills sorted, and then it’ll be time for me to make dinner.”

“It’s just not fair,” sulked Kaylee.

“Yeah, well life’s not fair sometimes,” said her mother, grimacing. “Sometimes your stupid husband insists on driving his motorcycle at a hundred miles an hour in the rain and goes flying off the side of a mountain road, leaving you to pick up the pieces.”

“Mom!” said Kaylee, bursting into tears as she turned and fled up to the sanctuary of her room.

Belle of the Ball

Kaylee waited until she heard the music thumping at top volume before she eased open the basement door and crept down the steps.

If she angled herself just right, she could peep in on what was happening without her brother ever finding out.

Despite the uptempo music, however, no one was dancing. Instead, two of her brother’s friends were sitting on a sofa, talking, and the rest weren’t visible from her vantage point.

Kaylee sat there and waited, sure that a wild party was about to break out at any moment, but the only thing that happened was a couple of more guys ambled over to join in on the interminable conversation.

Kaylee had watched from her bedroom window as Eric’s friends arrived one by one. Some she didn’t recognize or it was too dark to make out their features, but a couple she remembered from when she had been in middle school.

They all looked older now and even more handsome. Unlike the dumb boys from her school, Eric’s friends all had their own vehicles, including one guy who pulled up in a sports car. Sure, his friends had teased her back in the old days, but Kaylee was sure that they’d find her a lot more interesting now that she was a young woman.

Crouched in that awkward position, her muscles soon began to cramp. Deciding she needed a quick pee break anyway, Kaylee got up and then headed back upstairs. In the bathroom mirror, she spent a few minutes primping her hair just on the off chance that she might accidentally bump into one of Eric’s friends. She also surreptitiously took off her bra and stashed it in the dirty clothes’ hamper.

Kaylee was so eager to see if the party was now in full swing that she crashed into Jonas on her way out of the bathroom. Out of all of Eric’s friends, he was the dreamiest, and now that he was standing before her with that thick wavy hair of his and those gorgeous green eyes, she felt her heart skip a beat.

“Hey, um, do you know where the bathroom is?” said Jonas.

“Gosh, yes, you found it,” said Kaylee, doing a deep curtsey, feeling her cheeks grow warm with embarrassment as she stepped aside.

As soon as the bathroom door was closed, she began to berate herself. Why did she have to act so silly around him? She should’ve just acted calm and cool like older girls do. In order to calm her frazzled nerves, she went into the kitchen to warm up some milk to make hot chocolate.

“Hey,” said Jonas from behind her a few moments later, startling her.

“Oh, hey,” said Kaylee, reminding herself to act nonchalant.

“I’m Jonas,” he said, extending his hand.

“I’m, uh, Kaylee,” said Kaylee, unable to stop herself from blushing furiously.

“Have we met before? Because you look familiar,” said Jonas, a thoughtful look on his impossibly gorgeous face.

“I’m, uh, Eric’s sister,” said Kaylee, her brain too dizzy to come up with a fake story to impress him.

“Oh, yeah, yeah,” said Jonas, smiling and nodding. “Well, hey, we’re having a little party downstairs if you want to come.”

“Really?” said Kaylee, playing with a lock of her hair.

“Sure, why not?” said Jonas. “I mean, we’re just hanging out and stuff. But it’d be nice to have some cute girls to talk to.”

“Wow, okay,” said Kaylee, trying her best to act cool even as her heart triphammered in her chest. “Yeah, I might do that.”

“Cool,” said Jonas, giving her a little wave. “See you there.”

The second that Jonas was out of sight, Kaylee had to put both of her hands over her mouth to stop herself from squealing with pure joy.

Yes! Not only had the cutest boy she’d ever met just invited her to the party, but he hadn’t even recognized her. That was proof that she was grown-up!

All thoughts of hot chocolate long forgotten, Kaylee fussed around the kitchen for a moment or two to pretend like she wasn’t about to pee her pants with excitement. She then took a deep breath, opened the basement door, and calmly walked down the steps.

When she got down into the basement, Kaylee looked around. Eric, thankfully, was over in the corner, playing that stupid card game with pictures of dragons and elves on the front with a couple of his friends. Jonas, meanwhile, was showing something on his phone to two other guys when he spotted her and smiled.

“Hey,” said Kaylee, breezing her way over to Jonas as if going to parties was something she did all the time.

Jonas introduced her to the other two guys and then Kaylee listened as he explained something about some app where you could make easy money by doing odd jobs. She didn’t have anything to contribute to the conversation, but it felt really good just standing there and being accepted by all the guys.

“Hey, I told you, you’re not invited,” said Eric, coming over and trying to ruin everything after a few minutes.

“Chill, man,” said Jonas, causing Kaylee’s heart to leap for joy. “I asked her to come.”

“I don’t want my little sister ruining everything,” said Eric, turning to face Jonas.

“Ruin what?” said Jonas with a chuckle. “This sausage festival? Come on, bro. Just chill, all right?”

“Fine,” said Eric, turning to glare at Kaylee.

Kaylee gave him a triumphant smile in return. Not only had sweet Jonas defended her, but now she had the right to stay at the party as long as she wanted to.

Nonetheless, nothing very exciting happened for the next hour or so. Despite the great music, the guys just wanted to hang out and talk about an endless litany of boring stuff like betting on sports and cryptocurrency and a bunch of other stuff she couldn’t care less about.

It was fun being close to Jonas, and there were a couple of other cute guys in attendance as well, but it barely seemed like a party. Even the snacks sucked, just some chips and pretzels in plastic bowls. And plenty of beer, of course, which she had no interest in.

Kaylee was beginning to wonder why she’d made such a fuss about coming to the party when the playlist switched over to one of her favorite songs. It was a track she’d listened to hundreds of times, and instinctively, she began to dance, letting the rhythm take her away the way good music always did.

The next thing she knew, a bunch of the guys were clapping and cheering her on. Emboldened by their enthusiasm, Kaylee let herself go full tilt, grinding and swaying to the music.

Now, there was no more boring talk about Bitcoin. Instead, she was the center of attention, and it sent a thrill racing down her spine as she busted out her best dance moves. The song was perfect for it, too, with a deep bass line and high-tempo rhythm.

The crowd went even wilder when she impulsively leapt up onto the card table to continue dancing. All the guys were gathered around her, their eyes shining with excitement as she flared her hips and let herself get pulled into the flow of the music. Redoubling her efforts, she spun and twirled as all the guys shouted their encouragement.

By the time the song switched over to a slower track, Kaylee’s whole body was flushed with excitement. Jonas graciously offered his arm to help her climb back down to the floor, and then all of the guys began swarming her, giving her compliments about what a good dancer she was.

Only Eric in the corner had a sour look on his face, but Kaylee couldn’t care less. She was the belle of the ball, and she was determined to savor every minute of it. Every guy wanted to chat with her, and two guys vied to bring over the bowl of snacks to try and win her favor.

It was an amazing night, and Kaylee wanted it to go on forever. But then, inevitably, the guys began drifting back to their stodgy old conversations.

Kaylee kept hoping that another uptempo song would come on so she could have an excuse to start dancing again, but whoever had made the playlist had evidently been in a depressive mood because it was all slow, moody stuff.

Eventually, the night got late, and the guys started saying their goodbyes one by one. Kaylee hoped that Jonas might come over and ask for her contact info, but he was wrapped up in an enthusiastic conversation about football statistics with two other guys when it came time for him to head out.

Kaylee dashed up the stairs after them, but they got in their cars and drove off without a word in her direction. Realizing that the party was well and truly over, Kaylee went up to her bedroom and changed into her pajamas.

It may not have been much, but for a brief moment, she had known what it felt like to be popular.

Center of Attention

A couple of days later, Kaylee was sitting on the living room sofa, rehashing her memories of that fabulous night while simultaneously trying to decide what to wear if another opportunity like that arose.

Eric walked past her and then stopped as if he had realized he had forgotten something. He then took a deep breath and turned to face her.

“Listen, um, I’m having another get-together tonight,” he said, gulping hard. “And, um, I was wondering if you’d like to come.”

“I don’t get it,” said Kaylee, her eyes narrowing. “What’s the catch?”

“Catch? There’s no catch,” said Eric, acting suspiciously casual. “I just know how much you wanted to come to the last one, so I’m inviting you.”

“Hmm,” said Kaylee.

“Look, alright?” said Eric. “I just want to chill and hang out with my friends. But, um, apparently you were quite the hit last time, so a couple of the guys specifically asked me to invite you.”

“Wow,” said Kaylee, a tingle racing across her skin. “For real?”

“Whatever,” said Eric, turning to walk away.

“Hey!” said Kaylee, springing to her feet. “It’s cool. I can come.”

“Fine,” said Eric, averting his gaze. “It starts around nine.”

“Cool,” said Kaylee, watching as he slowly trudged up the stairs.

Wow! So she had made a good impression on her friends. Awesome! And the fact that stupid Eric resented it made her victory all the sweeter.

Well, what did he know, anyway? He was supposed to be off at college, not stinking up the house with his dirty socks on the bathroom floor and half-eaten bowls of cereal in the sink.

How in the world he had such cool friends would forever be a mystery to her. Anyway, he could take his sour attitude and put it where the sun doesn’t shine. His friends wanted her there, and that’s all that mattered.

With a huge smile on her face, Kaylee bounded upstairs to her room to begin work on choosing an outfit that would knock Jonas and the other guys off their feet.

With her mom working a late shift at the diner, Kaylee decided to push the limit and went with an ensemble of her shortest skirt and cutest crop top. She even crept over to her mom’s room and spent a full ten minutes applying some lipstick and mascara.

Pronouncing herself 'gorgeous', Kaylee paced around her bedroom as butterflies danced in her stomach, waiting for the party to be in full swing before she made her grand appearance.

She didn’t want to arrive too early, but she also didn’t want to get there too late and thus disappoint Jonas and her other admirers.

Finally unable to contain her excitement any longer, she gave herself one last look in the mirror and then made her way downstairs, careful not to trip in her high heels. As she clomped across the kitchen, she could hear the music playing, causing her pulse to race. She paused to take a deep breath and then opened the basement door.

“Ahh, there she is!” said Jonas when he spotted her, several other guys’ faces lighting up as well.

Kaylee basked in all the attention, letting it warm her whole body from the inside out. Looking around, she saw that there were more people than last time, a whole sea of eager male faces all grinning at her.

Jonas gave a nod to someone in the back, and then an uptempo dance number began playing over the speakers. Kaylee smiled as she transitioned right into the flow, stepping and twirling to the rhythm. She had just started a new move she’d been practicing when the guys all began encouraging her to get up on the table, which had already been cleaned off.

Kaylee was happy to oblige them, stepping onto a chair and then up onto the table. Someone had set up some lights nearby that were trained in her direction, making her feel like a real star as she launched into her dance.

Whoever was playing the role of DJ knew what he was doing, as one uptempo track blended seamlessly into another. Kaylee shook her hips and threw her hands up to the sky as she whirled and sashayed to the rhythm, enjoying both the way the music was carrying her away to another world and all those faces looking up at her adoringly.

After three energetic songs in a row, Kaylee was beginning to worry her thighs would give out when the next track turned out to be a hip-hop number, thankfully slower in pace, with a deep bass line.

Getting into the groove of things, she then turned around and twerked for a minute, causing the crowd to erupt in wild cheers.

When she stood up, her face flushed with heat, Kaylee saw a number of the guys jumping up and down, cash money in their hand.

It took her dazzled mind half a second to figure out what was going on, but then she grinned as she launched into her most seductive number yet, really focusing on wiggling her hips and bouncing up and down to make her skirt fly up.

At that point, the guys were in a frenzy, so Kaylee went along with it, unzipping her skirt and tossing it into the crowd. She giggled as two guys fought over it, and then she let the sultry rhythm of the next song guide her into doing even more seductive poses, ending with her down on her knees as she wiggled her behind up and down.

She was so caught up in the pleasure of being the center of everyone’s attention that she scarcely noticed when the first guy tucked some money into the waistband of her underwear. Buzzing from the thrill of it all, Kaylee seductively made her way around the perimeter of the table, grinning as more and more guys competed to give her cash.

With her panties festooned with bills like she was some kind of ruffled green bird, Kaylee stood up and gave the crowd a bow, soaking in their clapping and shouts of enthusiasm. Her legs a bit wobbly from all the dancing, she accepted Jonas’s hand as he graciously helped her down from the table.

After that, what she really wanted to do was rest and drink some water, but all the guys kept crowding around her, telling her how amazing and sexy and beautiful she was. With her entourage in tow, she managed to tiptoe her way over to the sofa, guys shoving one another to be the lucky ones who got to sit down next to her.

One guy eventually did bring her a soda, but Kaylee could scarcely keep up as all the guys kept asking her questions, including how long she’d been a dancer and if she knew she was the hottest girl they’d ever seen.

The guy sitting on her left was so passionate that he even began putting his hand on her legs, squeezing her and telling her how perfect she was.

It was Eric who brought all the fun to a crashing halt, storming over and shouting at the guys not to touch her. Kaylee sulked as he stood there, glaring at anyone who wanted to pay attention to her until they all got up and drifted away.

When she was left all alone on the sofa, Eric threw her skirt at her and told her to get the hell out of the basement. Kaylee tried to protest, but the guys who had been her biggest supporters only moments ago were all clustered at the far end, locked in another one of their boring conversations.

With a scowl, Kaylee snatched up her skirt and headed upstairs. She then went into the bathroom and locked it, her eyes wide with wonder as she counted out all the money that the guys had stuffed into her underwear. It was easily more than her mother made in an entire shift at the diner.

She then got a bottle of water out of the fridge in the kitchen and headed up to her room, tired but still buzzing from her glorious moment on top of that table. I

If only Eric hadn’t been there to ruin everything, she could still be down there in the basement as cute guys fawned over her and told her how special she was.
