“I think it’s amazing that the Chinese can make a language out of tattoos.”–Louis C.K.
Jared Griner slowly came awake, not entirely willing to face the day just yet. He reached over to the other side of the bed, expecting to find Evvie there, but she wasn’t. He lay back and listened to the world around him. Above the occasional creaking of the house, the birds outside the window, and the whirr of the furnace, Jared faintly heard his wife’s voice. He couldn’t make out what she was saying, but it sounded like Evvie was on the phone with someone. It was early, and he had no idea who it might be at that hour. As Jared lay there wondering, he drifted back to sleep.
The next Jared knew, he was semi-awake, and Evvie was sliding into bed with him. She wiggled over, reached her arm across his chest, and rested her head on his shoulder.
“You were up early,” he said.
“I’m sorry, hon. Did I wake you?”
“If you did, it didn’t take. I only woke when a certain china doll crawled into my bed. Who were you talking to at the butt-crack of dawn?”
“Grace.”
“What? It had to be the middle of the night there.”
“No, it’s not that late. Singapore is fifteen hours ahead of us, so it’s no worse than late evening.”
“Oh, sorry, I have trouble keeping track of that. Anyway, what did she want?”
“She and Byron broke up. She called to cry on my shoulder.”
“Oh, crap. Poor girl. And poor you; it can’t be easy for you to deal with that, especially as many times as it has happened. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m okay. I just feel sorry for Grace; nothing’s worked out well for her, and I just don’t understand why. I mean, she’s a real sweetheart, and she’s not exactly ugly.”
Evvie was right. Jared really didn’t know his sister-in-law very well, but the few interactions he’d had with Grace left him convinced of the sweetheart part.
As for her looks, well, Grace’s Mongolian-Chinese heritage had done her well. Like her sister, she had a heart-shaped face with big, dark eyes you could drown in. And her figure—Jared remembered someone once saying, “If you find a Chinese girl with big tits and an ass, she’s probably Mongolian.” He couldn’t testify to the veracity of the statement, but it certainly fit Grace and Evvie. They were both stunning.
“Some people are just unlucky, I guess. I wish we could do something to help her, but I can’t imagine anything, especially from nearly 9,000 miles away,” he said.
“Well, speaking of that… do you really mean it?”
“Sure I do. After all, she’s your sister. And you know how I feel about you.”
“I’ve been thinking about it, and there is something I expect would help her: she can come stay with us.”
“Really? Would she really come over here? Has she ever lived anywhere other than Singapore?”
“No, but I get the feeling she’s done with Singapore, and this breakup with Byron is enough to push her to take action. Yeah, she’d come, if I offered.”
“Have you thought this through? Wouldn’t this cramp our style a bit?”
Jared was remembering the two of them making love all over the house. He’d come home from work before her and set up an ambush, capturing her and having his way with her. Or she’d get there first and meet him at the door, dressed only in high heels. His tab A fit her slot B perfectly, and they took advantage of that every chance they had.
“Yeah, you’re right, and it’s not something I would look forward to. But I really want to help my sister, and I think she’d have better luck here. Grace is sharp and driven, and she won’t have any problem finding a job here. If she can stay with us for a while—I’m talking about months, not years—then I expect she’ll get established and probably find someone.”
“Okay, then we invite her.”
“Really? Just like that?”
“Yes, really, just like that. I love you, Evelyn Bao. If someone in your family needs help, we’ll help them.”
“And I love you, Jared Griner. Let me show you how much.”
Evvie’s small hand wormed its way into his boxers and quickly found its target. Jared raised his hips as she used her other hand to peel off his undershorts, revealing his hardening member. He clearly didn’t need any foreplay; he was ready to go.
Jared interrupted her actions to pull off her t-shirt, exposing those magnificent breasts, perfectly round with small, dark nipples that were already stiff. He marveled at Evvie’s beauty and wondered what he’d done to deserve this woman. After a moment, he reached down, taking advantage of his longer body and arms to pull off her hip-hugger panties. Jared already smelled her arousal, and it made him even harder.
He pulled her on top of him and kissed her deeply. They’d been married for a while and knew each other’s sensitive spots and how to exploit them. Evvie leaned back and sat up, then directed his phallus into her tight pussy, sighing as he slid home. Jared put his hands on her sensitive breasts, playing with her nipples and tickling their undersides. They soon got into a well-practiced rhythm, their passion building to a summit before they each exploded in bliss. As Evvie returned to Earth, she rolled off Jared and tucked herself under his arm, settling in for a snuggle. It was a weekend, so they took advantage and fell back to sleep.

Evvie’s ancestors had moved from Mongolia into China, their Mongolian ancestors’ multisyllabic name becoming abbreviated in the course of their assimilation into China. Evvie wasn’t sure she could even properly pronounce the original Mongolian name. Her grandparents had fled China during the 1949 Chinese Civil War and ended up in Singapore. The Bao family reestablished themselves there, putting down new roots.
Evvie’s parents raised their four children with a strong work ethic and a drive for academic performance. Grace, the oldest of the four, excelled in school and in her career; her only failure was in her love life.
Evvie, the second oldest, decided in her adolescence that she wanted to go to college in America and was eventually accepted to one of the premier universities. Her younger siblings, Harvey and Anna, elected not to follow in her footsteps and stayed in Singapore.
Jared Griner came from farming stock, though it was a few generations before him. His grandfather and his father were both blue-collar workers who managed a middle-class lifestyle for their families. Jared did well in school and was accepted at a top-tier college.
He’d never “had a thing” for Asian women; in fact, he’d never asked one out. But when a college friend of his introduced him to Evvie, he was smitten. More than smitten, Jared was head over heels for this gorgeous young woman, and his feelings were reciprocated. They dated for their last two years of college, married immediately after graduation, and were the happiest couple anyone knew.
If there was anything, anything at all he could do for Evvie, Jared would do it.

Grace was despondent. She’d been dating Byron for more than a year and at one time thought he might be “the one.” But their arguments had become more frequent and more intense. Even disagreements about trivialities turned into major conflicts. Still, Grace had thought they would work things out and was blindsided when he announced he was ending it.
She called her biggest supporter: her younger sister.
“Evvie, I don’t understand it. Why do my relationships all seem to go this way? I was with Peter for a long time, but that crashed. I thought Simon was a keeper, but he cheated on me. Then there was Julian, and now, Byron. I really thought he was the one. But as time went on, we started fighting more and more. We couldn’t disagree on anything without it turning into a donnybrook. Am I that hard to live with?”
“No, no, Grace, don’t say that. I used to live with you, and you’re not that bad. This isn’t your fault at all. You’re a sweetheart; we all know that. And you’re beautiful. Any of those guys would be lucky to have you. I just think they were mismatches; you were simply incompatible.”
“But why? Why do they seem to be a good fit, and then everything falls apart? I don’t know what to do. I realize I’m picky, but I’m looking for someone to spend the rest of my life with. And each time, it hasn’t worked.
“I have to admit, Evvie, I’m envious of you. You have found the perfect man, and the two of you are so happy. That’s what I want. Why can’t I find it? Where’s my perfect man?
“You know that saying, ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results’?” Grace asked.
“Yes. Some people here say they’re quoting Einstein, and some say it’s a Chinese proverb. We both know it’s not that.”
“Well, at this point, I have to do something different. If I don’t, I will be insane. I am coming to believe I’m never going to find my soul mate here. There are almost six million people here, but none of them is right. I’m at my wit’s end.”
“Maybe you need a change of scenery. What would you think about moving here?” Evvie asked.
“What, with you? Do you really mean it?”
“Of course I mean it. You’re my sister; I’m always here for you. You can come and stay with us. I’ve already discussed it with Jared, and he immediately agreed. We’d love to have you here. You could have a new start.”
“Oh my God, that would be wonderful! Yes, yes, yes!” Grace was ecstatic.

Evvie had expected she’d have to convince her sister to come to the States, so she was pleasantly surprised at Grace’s enthusiasm. Their excitement was dampened when they confronted the immigration process. Grace could come to the US as a tourist, but that wouldn’t allow her to work. She didn’t want to come for only a few months; she was ready for a more permanent change. Evvie could petition for Grace to get a green card as a family member, but some sources said that might take ten to twenty years!
Grace worked for a multinational technology company with offices in California and Texas, in addition to Singapore and Taiwan. The quickest route for Grace to join her sister would be to apply for a transfer to a US office; if the company approved, they would sponsor her work visa. It would still take time, but it looked to take months rather than years. Grace immediately set about getting a transfer.

Working through Grace’s employer and US immigration had finally paid off: though it had taken nearly a year, she was finally on her way to California. Grace was apprehensive and excited all at once. When she’d started this, she was ready for a change, and nothing had happened in the intervening months to change her mind. But still, moving to a foreign country… she was getting cold feet.
Evvie had done everything conceivable to soothe her sister’s nerves.
“Grace, we’ll do all we can to make this easy for you. We’ll meet you at the airport and bring you here. We’ve already cleared out and furnished a bedroom for you.
“Once you get here, we’ll show you around and introduce you to our friends. Jared even got you a car. It used to be his sister’s, so it’s not new, but it’s reliable, it’ll get you around, and it’s yours. You will have to learn how to drive on the right side of the road, but if I can do it, you can, too.
“You’ve already gone through the hard part, working through the bureaucracy. We want you to come here, and we’re excited, waiting for you.”
“Okay, okay, I’m on my way.”
◊◊◊
A month later, Grace had a tearful goodbye with her parents, brother, and youngest sister and boarded the flight to the US.
◊◊◊
Grace walked out of immigration and customs, dragging her suitcase and looking for her sister. Finally, she spotted Evvie and Jared, who were standing off to one side, trying to pick her out of the crowd, and ran to them. The sisters had a joyful reunion, hugging, squealing, and talking over each other.
“I’m so glad you’re here! This is going to be so much fun!”
Jared stood back, looking at these two beautiful women. Grace looked every bit as hot as Evvie—maybe better, if he were being honest. He loved his wife, but there was something about Grace, something he couldn’t put his finger on, that got him hard.
Eventually, Evvie and Grace decided they’d best go home, so they all traipsed off to the car. All the drive home, Evvie and Grace chattered in a combination of English and Chinese—mostly the latter. Jared’s Mandarin was rather weak and spotty, so he paid attention to the road while letting the sounds of the sisters’ enthusiasm wash over him.
◊◊◊
Jared and Evvie got Grace settled in and launched the “Make Grace Californian” project. Just as they had planned, they showed her around, taking her to see the sights that most Californians took for granted and themselves never visited. When she first came to the US, Evvie was astonished at how many natives had never been to Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, or Sequoia National Park. San Francisco’s Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Joshua Tree National Park, Hearst Castle, the Getty Museum, Death Valley, the Monterey Bay Aquarium…. There were so many, and of course they had to schedule around work, but the three of them did their best to hit as many as they could.
Jared and Evvie introduced Grace to all their friends, took her to events and parties, and generally did everything they could to make her welcome. Grace slowly became immersed in their social circles.
Jared found Grace’s accent interesting; it was more pronounced than her sister’s. That was probably because Evvie had spent her college years in the US and Grace hadn’t, so Evvie had started younger and had more years of immersion. Grace spoke mostly British English, but some words were more American in pronunciation and usage. Like many Singaporeans (including Evvie), Grace spoke multiple languages, including Mandarin, but she always spoke English to him.
Occasionally, she’d throw in a word Jared didn’t recognize. Evvie explained to him that Singapore had multiple official languages: English, Singaporean Mandarin, Tamil, and Malay. But there was a fifth, unofficial language: Singlish, which borrowed words from all four. The Singaporean government tried to stamp out Singlish but wasn’t as successful as they would have liked. When Grace used a word he didn’t recognize, Jared didn’t know which of those non-English languages it came from.
Grace was happy to have a car of her own. When she said she needed to learn how to drive in America, Jared volunteered to teach his sister-in-law. Evvie was relieved, knowing she would run out of patience with her sister, and Jared would be calmer.
But learning to drive on the “wrong” side of the road proved to be an exercise in frustration for Grace. Though she knew the mechanics of driving, her habits from driving in Singapore were hard to break—and a mistake could get her killed or injured. Jared tried his best with her, but he and Grace were getting frustrated, and they both wanted to be sure not to take it out on the other. Finally, Jared and Evvie signed Grace up for a commercial driving school, and in short order, she’d mastered American driving (well, at least as good as most Californians). She soon regularly commuted to work.
It took a little while, but eventually, Grace became Californicated, though there were still many things that confused her.
“Evvie, I don’t understand. People in LA call Interstate 5 ‘The Five,’ while people in the San Francisco Bay Area call it ‘I-5’ and deride anyone who refers to it as ‘The Five.’ Why the difference?”
“Sorry, sis, I have no idea. It never made sense to me either.”
“Okay, well, why is Orange County ‘red’? And San Francisco ‘blue’?”
“That’s all politics. You can ask someone from either place, and you’ll get some different stories about what’s wrong with the other. But if I were you, I’d just stay away from it; it gets ugly.”
“Then one last question: why do other people think California’s pizza isn’t real? I read things about the pizza topping controversy, like whether it’s really pizza if it has exotic cheese or alfalfa sprouts on it.”
“That one may be worse than the politics. I mean, there’s even a big fuss about whether you can put pineapple on pizza.”
“Really? We used to get pineapple on pizza all the time back home.”
“Yup. And if you tell them we put durian fruit on it, well, their heads will explode.”
◊◊◊
All in all, Grace enjoyed being in the US, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. She was thankful to Evvie and Jared for putting her up and putting up with her. But living with them was difficult at times: Grace knew they were trying not to embarrass or shock her, but she regularly heard the sounds of their lovemaking. It made her so horny, Grace worried she might lose control and attack some guy on the street.
It didn’t help that she was becoming more and more attracted to her brother-in-law. Jared seemed to be everything she wanted in a partner, but he was forbidden fruit. Besides, he seemed to be keeping her at arm’s length, though she wasn’t sure why. It made the atmosphere at home a bit tense at times, and Grace didn’t know what to do about it.
At least work was going well, and Grace had made several friends there, in particular Laney Cornejo. Laney thought her ancestors had come over with the conquistadors, though she’d never done the research to confirm it. But whatever her ancestry, Laney was a California native through and through. Laney was bright, outgoing, attractive, and, when it came to men, omnivorous—her “type” was anyone having a penis and a pulse. She would make the most outrageous comments about almost anything, often making Grace simultaneously laugh and blush with embarrassment.
They would occasionally go out together after work. Grace’s looks attracted a lot of male attention, and Laney and her female friends from work often advised Grace on who to stay away from. She was open to dating someone from work, so long as it wasn’t someone she worked closely with. But so far, she had only been approached by those her friends identified as “players.”
One evening, Grace invited Evvie and Jared to join her work friends at a local watering hole. After all, Evvie and Jared had introduced Grace to their friends, so it was only right that she introduce them to hers. Evvie and Jared seemed to fit in well with the group, and the conversation flowed freely, though Laney seemed determined to make both Evvie and Grace blush.
Jared and Evvie had dinner plans and excused themselves. Once they’d left, Laney turned to Grace.
“Ohmigod, Grace, he is fine. Have you gotten some of that?
“LANEY! He’s my brother-in-law!”
“Girl, I don’t think I would care. I would do him in the living room with the whole family watching.”
“You’re terrible. He’s not like that. I’m not like that.”
“Well, Iam. Is he really as nice as he seems?”
“Yes, he is. He treats Evvie like… I dunno, some sort of royalty or something, like she’s a goddess to be worshipped. When the two of them are teasing each other, he calls her his china doll.”
“What does she call him?”
“‘White boy,’ or sometimes ‘round eyes.’ I don’t know where she picked that up because we don’t usually use those terms in Singapore.”
“That’s cute. Does he treat you like he does her?”
“Almost. He really does treat me well; I mean, he gave me his sister’s car! But at times, it seems like Jared’s trying to keep me at a distance, though that might be just because we really haven’t known each other all that long.”
“I’m jealous. I wish I could find a guy who’d treat me like that.”
“Me, too. I see what the two of them have, and I think, yeah, that’s what I want.”
“Well, maybe we’ll just have to find you your own Jared. There has to be one around here somewhere.”
“Maybe, but he hasn’t turned up yet. Anyway, if it were that easy, wouldn’t you have found your Jared by now?”
