A Sister’s Betrayal, A Lover’s Lie
Romance / Contemporary / Tragedy / Betrayal / Ruthless
The heat felt like burning magma, drying out her whole body. The only person who could save her was the man standing in front of her.
She held on tight to his cool, marble-like skin. Finally, her survival instinct made her stop resisting.
Pain and pleasure mixed together, bursting in her mind like fireworks. She felt like a small boat in a fiery sea, floating and sinking, unable to escape.
“Hey, wake up… It’s cold here. Don’t catch a cold.”
A pressure on her shoulders made Selena Ning open her eyes. She looked up in confusion and saw a nurse staring at her with concern. Selena’s face turned red with embarrassment, and she quickly looked away.
Damn it. Even after so long, she still sometimes dreamed about that messy night with Roman when she’d been drunk.
Luckily, she’d been so drunk that she couldn’t remember the details of that night. Otherwise, she really didn’t know how she’d face Roman.
The nurse saw she was awake and handed her a piece of paper. “You forgot your pregnancy test report. Dr. Zhang said to come back next week.”
Selena took the report, smiled politely, and carefully put it into her bag.
Roman was coming back from his business trip overseas today. Thinking about meeting him tonight made Selena nervous.
Because Roman’s place had been so remote, she hadn’t been able to contact him until the baby was already more than seven months old.
She still remembered how shocked Roman had looked when he found out she was pregnant. Thinking about it now made her anxious.
Was it just her pregnancy making her more sensitive? Selena felt like Roman wasn’t as happy about the baby as she was.
The doctor told her that many men are slow to adjust to the idea of having their first child. It was the same all over the world.
But… there was no talk of marriage. Should she be the one to bring it up?
Outside the hospital, the sun was bright in the sky.
Selena held her aching back and was about to wave for a taxi when suddenly a bright red sports car rushed toward her.
Selena froze, then stepped quickly backward.
The car’s engine roared loudly. The red sports car zoomed past her so close it almost touched her clothes, then came to a screeching stop.
Selena’s heart was beating wildly. She could barely stand straight as she saw Susie Ning get out of the car, shaking her curly hair and wearing a tight red dress.
“Susie, are you crazy?” Selena shouted.
Susie smiled in a way that wasn’t friendly. She crossed her arms and walked forward like she was on a fashion runway. She stopped right in front of Selena.
Standing tall on her high heels, Susie looked down at Selena’s pregnant belly and said proudly, “What? Are you scared I’ll kill that bastard in your belly?”
Selena quickly put her hands over her stomach, stepping back and staring at Susie with fear. “Susie, don’t go too far!”
Selena knew Susie had always been against her. But she never thought Susie would say something so cruel.
“I’m going too far? You’re the one who went too far!” Susie snapped. “You got drunk, slept with some random guy, got pregnant, and now you want Roman to be the father? Tsk, tsk… Selena, you should be ashamed!”
Selena stared at her, shocked. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
“Oh, come on. Don’t tell me you really think the man who slept with you that night was Roman?”
Susie laughed so hard she almost bent over. “I’ve known Roman since we were kids. Don’t you think I know what his body looks like?”
As Selena listened, her face grew paler and paler. Even though the sun was burning hot, she felt cold all over.
That’s right… the man from that night…
She had always thought Roman might just be stronger than she expected.
But now, after Susie’s cruel words, memories came flooding back. And suddenly, she realized that besides his build, the man that night seemed very different from Roman in many small ways…
“Let me tell you the truth!” Susie said. “You drank the wine I drugged that night. You were full of desire and couldn’t control yourself. So I kindly found two strong men for you. But who knew you’d be so stupid that you wandered into some stranger’s room and started acting wild with him…”
Susie’s voice dripped with disgust. “Roman is just too soft-hearted. He was afraid you couldn’t handle the truth when you woke up. That’s why he told you it was him that night.”
“You…” Selena was shaking with anger. She couldn’t hold it in anymore. She grabbed Susie’s wrist. “Why did you do this to me? Why? Haven’t you hurt me enough already?”
Susie was about to push Selena away. But when she saw Roman standing behind Selena, her voice suddenly turned sweet, and she looked pitiful.
“Sister, I know I was wrong. If you want to hit me or yell at me, do it to me. Don’t blame Roman…”
Selena froze for a moment. In the next second, Susie suddenly fell to the ground, as if Selena had pushed her.
“Selena! What are you doing…” A cold voice scolded her from behind.
Selena spun around in surprise and saw Roman standing there, his face emotionless.
Roman stepped forward and helped Susie up. “Susie, are you alright?”
Susie clung to him as if she would collapse without his support. “Roman, I didn’t mean it. I really know I was wrong… I’m so sorry for causing trouble for my sister…”
“Alright. I’ll handle everything,” Roman said, patting Susie’s shoulder. He guided her toward the car. “I’ll explain things to Selena.”
Selena stood there in shock, her mind blank, as Roman turned to her. She watched his lips moving as he spoke.
He talked for a long time.
He talked about how he and Susie had been childhood sweethearts. About how he struggled with his feelings for Susie.
About how angry he was when he learned Susie had framed Selena. About his shock and guilt when he found out Selena was pregnant. About how he finally forgave Susie.
At the end, he said quietly, “Selena, I’m sorry. I can’t marry you. It’s not because of what happened that night, or because of the child. But because I can’t let Susie down anymore. I don’t want to keep lying about my feelings.”
Over the past few months, Roman had taken Susie abroad with him. After spending every day together, they became closer than ever. Even though Roman had admitted that he was the one with Selena that night to protect her, in his heart, he had already chosen Susie.
So when he found out Selena was pregnant, he went to the Ning family to explain everything. And today, he was finally telling Selena the truth.
“So you’re saying…” Selena finally found her voice, staring at him in disbelief. “Roman… you knew from the start that Susie drugged me to ruin me? And you lied, saying it was you that night, just to protect her?”
“Selena, Susie didn’t mean any harm. She’s young and impulsive…” Roman said gently.
“What about me?” Selena shouted, looking up at him, her face full of despair. “Did you ever think about me, even for one second?”
Roman stayed silent. After a long pause, he reached out to touch her arm. “It’s hot here. Let’s go home first…”
“Don’t touch me!” Selena yelled. She shoved his hand away and suddenly started laughing bitterly.
Right now, Selena felt like her entire life was a joke.
To come to Roman’s city, she worked so hard to get into B University.
To please him, she gave up her dream of becoming an actress.
To be with him, she left her adoptive parents and returned to the Ning family, trying so hard to fit in with all the rich socialites.
And in the end, the only thing she got was one cold sentence: “I can’t let Susie down.”
Susie had already stolen her identity and her real parents. And now… she’d stolen the man Selena loved.
Susie was “young,” so people forgave her mistakes.
But who would pay for Selena’s ruined life?
She didn’t even know who the man was that night.
Covering her face, Selena trembled violently, feeling completely hopeless.
Roman saw Selena stumbling toward the road in a daze. He threw away the cigarette he was holding and was about to chase after her. But Susie clutched his sleeve and said softly, “Roman, where are you going?”
In the moment Roman hesitated, there was a loud crash.
Selena, who had been crossing the street, was suddenly thrown into the air and landed hard on the ground.
“Selena, you idiot—you ran into a pregnant woman!” someone shouted.
In the blinding lights, Selena could see blurry figures moving and the faces of two people she hated most.
Pain twisted her stomach, and her vision went dark. Blood streamed from a wound on her forehead, washing over her eyes.
Her entire world faded into blackness.
Five years later.
Eaton Bar. An empty hallway on the top floor.
Selena had been drinking all night with an investor. Her head felt like it was splitting open. She wanted to find a quiet place to sober up, but Janice suddenly followed her. So she forced herself to stay alert and asked, “What’s the matter, Miss Chang?”
“Selena, let me ask you. Did you sign up for the audition for the lead actress in The World ?”
“Yes, I did. Why?”
“You’re not allowed to go tomorrow!” Janice, her manager, blocked her from auditioning for the role that many big entertainment companies were fighting over.
Selena wasn’t surprised. She just raised her eyebrows and asked, “Why not?”
“You’re asking me why without telling me first? The company has already arranged for Susie to audition. Don’t you know that?”
Selena gave her a half-smile. “That doesn’t conflict with the company’s plans. Did Susie ask you to talk to me? Is she afraid some unknown, bottom-ranked actress like me will steal her role?”
“You? Steal Susie’s role? You’re dreaming!” Janice snapped. “Listen to me—don’t waste your time. The Ning family invested 30 million in this drama, and Susie has already been chosen!”
“In that case, why are you so nervous?” Selena asked calmly.
“You’re my artist, so you have to follow my arrangements!” Janice said sharply.
“Oh, so you do remember that I’m your artist?” Selena replied sarcastically.
“Selena, I don’t have time to argue with you. Since you refuse to listen nicely, don’t blame me for what happens next!”
Right after saying that, Janice suddenly shoved Selena hard. Caught off guard, Selena was pushed into a nearby storage room. At the same time, Janice snatched her phone.
With a loud bang , the door slammed shut.
….
The footsteps outside faded away.
Selena knew yelling was useless. She said nothing and slowly slid down the door to sit on the floor, looking indifferent.
When she first joined the company, Susie kept her schemes small—like getting Janice to arrange villainous roles for her. But recently, Susie had gone too far, even using dirty tricks like this.
If Selena failed to get this role, she knew she’d have to find a way to leave Empire Entertainment for good.
As her thoughts raced, she suddenly heard a faint sound nearby.
Are there mice in here?
Selena turned toward the sound—and froze.
She saw a little boy hiding behind a stack of boxes.
He looked about four or five years old, small and pale, like a delicate little bun. He was huddled in the corner, trembling, his big dark eyes full of fear and caution.
Huh? Why is there a child in the storage room of a bar?
Who would bring a kid to a bar?
“Hey, little bun, who are you? How did you get in here?”
“Did you sneak in?”
“Were you locked in too?”
“Want some candy?”
Selena kept asking questions, but the little boy didn’t say a single word. Instead, he shook even more, like a scared little animal.
Seeing this, Selena stopped talking. Well, it’s not really my problem, she thought.
So the two of them—one big, one small—sat quietly in separate corners of the room.
Then, suddenly, the light bulb overhead flickered and went out completely.
In the dark, Selena heard a faint creaking sound. She listened carefully and realized it was the sound of teeth chattering.
Selena chuckled and asked the boy, “Are you afraid of the dark?”
The chattering paused for a second, then grew even louder.
Oh boy, he’s so timid…
Selena sighed, stood up, and began walking toward the little boy…
Rick’s face turned pale with fear.
But Selena simply sat down next to him. She didn’t do anything, just closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Janice had dragged her out drinking with people tonight, and now Selena’s head was pounding.
When Selena woke up a while later, she felt something warm against her leg. She looked down and saw the little boy leaning against her. His small hand was gripping the edge of her clothes.
Selena couldn’t help laughing.
Back when she lived in the countryside, she’d raised a cat who was very shy and afraid of people. The cat would run away whenever someone approached. But if you ignored it and stayed still, it would quietly sneak up on you and sometimes even curl up in your lap to sleep.
This little boy was the same.
When he noticed her looking at him, his little face turned pink. But this time, there was no panic in his eyes—just curiosity shining in his big, dark eyes.
He really did look like a little kitten, even his eyes were similar.
Selena’s lips curved into a smile. Her hands itched to touch him. Finally, she couldn’t resist and reached out to rub his soft hair.
But as soon as she touched him, her smile disappeared.
Why is his forehead so hot?
“Do you have a fever?” she asked urgently.
Janice would probably keep her locked up at least until the audition was over tomorrow—or maybe even longer.
It was dangerous for a child to have such a high fever.
While worrying, Selena noticed something odd. The light bulb was broken, so where was the light coming from?
She looked up and saw a small skylight above her. A faint glow of starlight was shining in.
Selena searched around, found a ladder, and dragged it over.
“Little bun, come here. I’ll help you get out!”
The little boy finally reacted to her words, but shook his head firmly.
Selena understood and smiled, pinching his cheek gently. “You’re so loyal, huh? Want to stay here and share the hardship with me? Listen, the window’s too small for me to fit through. You go out first, then find someone to help me.”
When he still hesitated, Selena simply picked him up and placed him on the ladder. “Quick! Be brave. I’ll keep you safe from down here!”
She managed to help the child climb out through the skylight. But as soon as she did, a wave of dizziness hit her. Her legs gave way, and she fell from the ladder.
At the window, the little boy stared down in shock and fear, his face frozen.
Selena forced out a word: “Go…”
Under the starlight, her face looked pale and exhausted, yet it couldn’t hide how beautiful she was. Her eyes were especially striking—clear and shining like an ocean reflecting the stars.
She was no longer the country bumpkin or the ugly duckling she used to be.
But what was the use of that now?
Selena gave a bitter smile. She hadn’t even gotten her revenge yet—and now it seemed like she was going to die here.
At least I saved the little bun, she thought. If my own child hadn’t died back then, he’d probably be about this age now…
After the car accident five years ago, the Ning family had felt she’d brought shame on them. They’d sent her off to a cheap college in the countryside—a place known for accepting spoiled kids and troublemakers—and left her on her own.
Selena dropped out of that school and applied again to USC, working herself almost to the point of collapse. She studied every subject she could get her hands on.
Because she wanted to defeat Susie. She wanted to take back everything that belonged to her.
Most of all, acting was her biggest dream in life.
After returning to China, her beautiful face and excellent acting skills caught Janice’s attention. She successfully signed with Empire Entertainment, the biggest talent agency in the industry.
Her family should have supported her. But Susie joined Empire right after her—and started suppressing her in every possible way…
At the same time, the atmosphere in the reception room of Eaton Bar was very serious.
The bar owner, manager, security guards, and other staff stood in a line, trembling. Their faces showed fear like something terrible was about to happen.
Because the little prince of Lu Corporation, Daniel’s precious son, had gone missing in their bar.
Daniel sat on the sofa, his face cold and hard like ice. He showed no emotion. But his strong pressure made everyone’s legs weak and sweat pour down their backs. Nobody dared to speak.
A young man was kneeling at Daniel’s feet, crying with tears and snot. “Brother, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault! I shouldn’t have brought Rick to the bar. If anything happens to Rick, I won’t stay alive!”
After saying that, he suddenly kicked his chest hard.
The sound of bones cracking made everyone’s scalp tingle. Everyone trembled.
Saul Li coughed violently, clutching his chest, then stood up, straightened his back, and knelt again.
His parents were on vacation abroad and didn’t know Rick was missing. If they knew, Saul would be punished far worse than a kick from his brother—he might be beaten severely.
Feeling ashamed, Saul stayed silent.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the reception room door.
The bar owner nearest to the door opened it. No one was there. Surprised, he looked down and was shocked to see: “Little… Young Master!!!”
“Little Treasure… Oh my god! Little Treasure! Second Uncle’s darling! Where have you been?” Saul jumped up and hugged the little boy tightly, crying bitterly.
Everyone in the room looked like they had just survived a disaster.
Daniel walked to the door in a few steps, grabbed Saul by the back of his collar, and threw him aside. Then he knelt in front of his son. “What happened?”
Finally free from his second uncle’s arms, Little Treasure grabbed Daniel’s hand, trying anxiously to pull him away.
When Daniel got close to his son, he smelled alcohol on him. Along with that was a faint scent—not strong perfume, but a light, cold fragrance like flowers blooming on ice. The strange scent felt familiar, and Daniel’s heart skipped a beat.
Seeing Daniel hesitate, Rick pointed with his little finger in one direction. His face was full of worry.
Daniel picked up his son and walked straight toward the direction Rick pointed.
Saul and the others looked at each other and quickly followed.
Five minutes later, the group stopped in front of the warehouse door on the top floor.
Rick twisted his body, jumped off his father, and slammed on the warehouse door with a very anxious look.
“What’s wrong with Rick? What’s inside?” Saul asked, confused.
Daniel ordered coldly, “Open the door.”
“Yes, yes!” The bar owner nodded fast, then turned and scolded the female manager next to him. “Manager Ye, why are you standing there? Open the door! Where’s the key?”
“Uh… Open the door?” The female manager froze.
Oops! She suddenly remembered Selena was still locked inside! She had promised Janice to keep Selena locked up at least until the audition was over.
But now, with the Lu family’s two important men and the boss waiting, how could she say no? Shaking, she took out the key and opened the door.
As soon as the door opened, a woman collapsed on the floor, unconscious.
“What’s going on? Why is there a woman inside?” The boss shouted angrily.
“I… I don’t know! When I checked earlier, no one was here!” The female manager explained, feeling guilty.
“Quick! Help her!”
As soon as someone tried to get close to Selena, Rick jumped in front of her with a serious look. He didn’t let anyone near her.
“Boss Lu, this…” The bar owner looked confused and didn’t know what to say.
Daniel glanced at the guilty-looking female manager, then at the broken ladder on the ground and the small skylight above that only a child could fit through. He guessed what had happened.
He waved everyone back and walked over to hug the woman himself.
The faint cold scent around her became clearer.
When Daniel hugged her, Rick didn’t stop him, but his small face showed he wasn’t very happy. It was like he wanted to say, “If I were older, I wouldn’t let you hug her.”
The next morning, City B First People’s Hospital
When Selena woke up, it was already morning.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw a man sitting by the window across from her.
His long legs were crossed casually. His well-fitted suit showed his broad shoulders and slim waist. His white shirt was buttoned all the way up. The sunlight shone on him, but he seemed cold as ice. His proud, calm expression was like a king in a medieval castle.
The man noticed her looking and suddenly raised his deep, sea-like eyes. His cold gaze looked straight at her.
That stare was sharp, like a scalpel cutting inch by inch. It made Selena’s hair stand on end.
She shivered but ignored the strange man’s cold eyes and asked nervously, “Sir, can you tell me how I got here? Have you seen a little boy? About four or five years old, quiet, pale and soft-looking, very cute?”
The man raised his eyebrows at her description, then looked to her right and said in his cold voice, “You mean Rick?”
Selena quickly looked and saw a small, soft, white little boy asleep on the bed next to her, drooling onto her hand.
“Yes! That’s him! His name is Rick?”
She finally relaxed and gently touched Rick’s forehead. His fever had gone down.
After saving the child, she felt worried. He was so young and had a fever. What if something happened to him alone in a messy place like a bar?
Selena looked again at the cold man with the scary aura and asked, “Are you this child’s...?”
As soon as she said it, she realized it was obvious.
They looked so much alike — like they were made from the same mold. They had to be father and son.
The cold man replied, “Father.”
“Hey, beauty, you’re awake! I’m Rick’s second uncle!”
Suddenly, a smiling man came from the side. Selena stepped back, shocked when she recognized him. “Lu… Saul?”
Saul was the second son of the Lu Group and owner of Shengshi Entertainment. He was famous for his good looks and charming personality and appeared in magazines more often than many celebrities.
She could never mistake that face.
The cold man was Rick’s father, and Saul was Rick’s uncle.
That cold man must be Daniel, Saul’s older brother.
Daniel was known as the God of Wealth in the capital city — like an uncrowned king.
Selena never expected she had saved Daniel’s famous illegitimate son, the shining little prince…
Daniel looked at the woman lying on the hospital bed carefully, as if trying to figure out if the surprise on her face was real or fake.
After a moment, he probably believed that she didn’t know Rick’s identity beforehand. Then he said coldly, “Your request.”
“Uh, what request?” Selena asked, confused by the sudden words.
“My brother wants to thank you for saving Rick, so he asked you to make a request!” Saul said with a smile like she had just won a prize.
Selena’s head spun, and she said carefully, “Actually, you don’t have to thank me. I saved Rick, yes, but he also saved me. If Rick hadn’t gone out to find help first, I would still be locked inside. So, it’s even.”
Even though she was lucky to save the little prince, she didn’t want to take credit. The richer the person, the more likely they are to think she’s lying or tricking them—especially the Lu family, one of the richest and most powerful families. Didn’t Daniel just look at her like he didn’t trust her?
It’s better to keep distance from them to avoid trouble.
Selena thought this answer was safe, but Daniel’s face stayed serious and scary. She felt frightened.
Had she said something wrong? Why did he look so terrifying?
“Brother, don’t look so scary,” Saul said, noticing Selena’s fear. “If you know it’s a favor, then it’s paying back, but if you don’t, it’s revenge!”
He looked at Selena and said, “My brother hates owing favors, so you should make a request! You’re welcome!”
People who force you to make a request?
Selena’s mouth twitched a little. “I’m not being polite. It’s really not necessary. I’m telling the truth. If you don’t believe me, you can check…”
“No need,” Daniel said shortly, sounding a little annoyed.
Saul added, “The bar warehouse has cameras. I checked. Rick ran in by himself. The bar manager admitted locking you in. So don’t worry, we don’t suspect you. You really saved Rick, so make a request!”
Back at it again!
In the end, Selena had no choice but to speak up under Daniel’s intense stare, “Okay… will you give me money?”
Don’t rich people like paying with money?
With Daniel’s personality, she thought he’d prefer to solve problems with money.
If he didn’t want to give money, maybe he wanted something else.
Just as Selena was sure this was the best request, Daniel’s expression turned even darker.
Selena wanted to cry. Why couldn’t he just say what he meant? Could a few words kill him?
Saul scratched his nose and said, “My brother thinks giving money is insulting.”
Selena screamed silently, Fine! Then insult me!
The Lu family was too special, and she didn’t know what else to ask.
When the deadlock lasted too long, Daniel finally said, “Marry me.”
Selena froze, then suddenly coughed violently, nearly choking, “Cough, cough… What did you say?”
After catching her breath, she looked at Saul anxiously, “Young Master, please translate!”
But Saul was also confused, “Brother, what do you mean? I can’t translate this one!”
Then, Selena smiled nervously and said, “Could it be… because I saved your son, you want to give me your body?”
Daniel nodded slightly, thought a moment, then said, “You can say that.”
Selena looked at the man with the cold, icy face in front of her and, feeling overwhelmed, weakly touched her forehead.
“Doctor… where’s the doctor? I think I’m losing my mind. Maybe I’m hallucinating…”
Saul beside him looked innocent and said, “Maybe I’m not crazy either?”
Even Selena, who had been through so much, couldn’t believe what she just heard.
She saved a little boy, and the boy’s father said he would repay her with his body ?
If it was someone else, and maybe a little handsome, she could understand it as a kind of romance.
But this was Daniel—Daniel!
He was handsome, yes, but Daniel was a legendary, peerless beauty like no one she’d ever seen.
If he just liked her, it wouldn’t scare her so much. It’s understandable that Daniel might want to flirt with her after seeing her face, but marry me ? That was terrifying.
And most importantly…
“Don’t you like men?” Selena blurted out.
Saul laughed so hard he nearly fell down. “Pfft ha ha ha!”
Daniel’s face darkened like the bottom of a deep pot, and the whole room felt tense.
After a while, Saul finally calmed down and said, “If my brother liked men, then how did Rick get here?”
“Well… surrogacy? Artificial insemination?”
“If my brother liked men, why would he commit to you?”
“To hide his true orientation?”
“Hahahahaha, brother, I can’t help you…”
Selena’s delicate eyes moved between the two brothers. “I also heard… I heard the two of you are a couple…”
Saul choked on his laughter. “Damn, that’s harsh! Even though I’m beautiful, I can kill both men and women!”
At that moment, Daniel slowly stood up and walked toward Selena with long, slender legs.
“Saul, take Rick outside.”
“Huh? Brother, what are you doing?”
Daniel adjusted his cuffs calmly. “I’m going to prove to Ms. Ning my sexual orientation.”
Seeing his terrifying expression and the look in his eyes like he wanted to rip her apart, Selena got so scared she fell off the bed and hid behind Rick, almost crawling under it.
“Mr. Lu, this has nothing to do with me! It’s all nonsense from people outside! There’s no debt or favor! And really, you don’t need to thank me. But if you insist I make a request, then please don’t ask me to make any more requests… Sorry, I have an important audition soon, so I have to go! See you!”
Selena finished speaking quickly and tried to run away.
After a few steps, Daniel’s cold voice stopped her, “Did I give you permission to leave?”
Selena’s legs trembled with fear.
My life is over!
A few seconds later, with Selena staring in shock, Daniel handed her paper and a pen.
“Miss Ning, please leave a note for Rick, so he won’t wake up worried about you.”
That’s it?
Disaster!
“Okay, okay, no problem! I can write a short note!” Selena breathed a sigh of relief, picked up the pen, and wrote quickly.
After finishing, worried something might happen, she hurried away.
Watching her leave, Daniel’s eyes were deep and cold, like a hunter looking at a chained prey.
Once Selena left, Saul bounced over excitedly.
“Brother, am I dreaming? Do you really like Selena? After all these years, even iron can be ground into needles, but you never looked twice at a girl. Now I almost think you’re a fraud…”
Before he could say more, Daniel snapped, “Shut up.”
“Oh.” Saul swallowed his words.
Being full of gossip but not allowed to ask was really killing him inside!
Because it was rush hour, the traffic was terrible, and Selena arrived very late.
Janice and Susie came out of the interview building, smiling happily, surrounded by people congratulating them.
From a distance, Susie saw Selena sweating and looked at her just like she did five years ago — with cold, sharp eyes, like looking down on an ant.
Susie got into the nanny’s car and left proudly. But Selena didn’t go after her. Instead, she ran quickly into the building.
“It’s not too late yet!”
Halfway through running, Selena bumped into a group of people laughing and chatting — they were the judges for the drama “The World.”
“Sorry I’m late!” Selena said, bowing deeply.
The judges exchanged unhappy looks. No one likes being late.
The assistant director said sternly, “The audition’s over. Why rush here now? Young people these days are so unreliable!”
“I’m not here to audition for the female lead,” Selena said.
“Oh? Then what role are you here for?” the screenwriter asked with interest.
“I’m here to audition for the second female lead — Meng Changge. As far as I know, you didn’t find a suitable candidate last time,” Selena said, lifting her chin confidently.
The room fell silent for at least five seconds. The assistant director who had been rude straightened up, surprised.
Everyone stared at Selena — her red lips, white teeth, long black hair down to her waist, and her bright red dress with a collar. The strong color didn’t hide her beauty; instead, it made her stand out.
She stood quietly, like a mysterious spirit in a misty forest — like a fox that had practiced magic for thousands of years. Her deep, bright eyes drew people in, as if inviting them into a beautiful dream. She looked both otherworldly and clear-eyed.
“What’s your name?” Director Guo Qisheng finally spoke, breaking the silence.
“Selena.”
Director Guo exchanged looks with the assistant director, screenwriter, and producer. Then he said, “I think I remember you. Aren’t you with Empire Entertainment? Go back and prepare. The second female lead role will be yours! We’ll notify you when filming starts.”
“Thank you, director! I will prepare well!” Selena bowed and thanked them.
Selena’s goal was the second female lead from the beginning.
She had spent three full months studying Meng Changge’s personality and feelings, trying her best to impress the judges with just one look.
Though there were many challenges, she finally succeeded.
After Selena left, Director Guo sighed, “It’s so hard to find someone like this, and it didn’t take much effort to get her. Though she’s signed with Empire, her reputation isn’t great. I didn’t take her seriously when she auditioned for the lead role under those conditions, but I didn’t expect she’d be even more beautiful in person.”
Screenwriter Ye Linglong couldn’t hide her excitement. “The most important thing is her temperament. Her eyes just now were perfect. Before Meng Changge became a disaster, she was a strong, honorable female general. She can be coquettish but must never be vulgar — always pure and noble. The other actresses acted like they were brothel courtesans, and it drove me crazy!”
“Hahaha, don’t be angry! Isn’t this just what you wanted?”
…
At the same time, at the First People’s Hospital of City B,
The ward where Rick was staying was crowded.
The little boy curled up on the windowsill, bare feet hanging, too restless to calm down no matter what the doctors and nurses said.
Saul tried to soothe him gently, but Rick didn’t believe him at all, not even as his uncle.
With no other options, Saul quickly called Daniel back from his company meeting.
“Brother, you’re here! Your little treasure suddenly went berserk!”
“What happened?” Daniel asked in a deep voice.
“I don’t know. After he woke up, he started looking for someone everywhere. I thought maybe he was looking for Selena, so I told him she already left. But as soon as I said that, he just stormed off. Little Treasure really likes Selena, but he wouldn’t react this strongly if she were really gone!”
Rick hadn’t shown such intense mood swings in a long time.
After hearing this, Daniel walked straight toward his son.
The little boy noticed Daniel coming and immediately shrank back, eyes full of suspicion and rejection, not even recognizing his own father.
Daniel stopped three steps away and calmly said, “Your second uncle told you your aunt has left — not gone missing or anything bad. She has no physical problems. She’s already been discharged and gone home. She’s not dead. If you leave like your grandma did, you’ll never come back. Understand?”
Only when talking to his son did Daniel show this much patience and speak so gently in one breath.
Saul was stunned. “Is there some mistake? I just said two words, ‘Let’s go,’ and he made up this whole story?”
In truth, Rick had been terrified when he saw Selena fall, so it was no surprise he misunderstood things while he was upset.
But even after Daniel’s explanation, Rick just curled up on the windowsill, burying his head and staying still.
Daniel then took out a note. “She gave you this. Want to see it?”
Rick paused for a moment, then as if a switch flipped, he lifted his head, opened his little hands, and motioned for his father to pick him up.
Saul: “…”
Doctors and nurses in the room: “…”
Everyone was on the verge of collapse from the emotional tension, yet Daniel managed to calm Rick with just a piece of paper?
Saul had thought that note was unnecessary, but now he was completely convinced.
Daniel hugged his son, sat down on the sofa, and handed him the note.
The little boy eagerly grabbed it. He could already read on his own.
Baby, thank you for saving me. You’re amazing…
Reading the words and the little heart drawn on the back, Rick’s eyes sparkled and his cheeks flushed a little. Though he pressed his lips shyly, the corners of his mouth twitched into a small smile. The little guy looked absolutely adorable.
Saul, shocked, said, “I’m leaving. Did I just see that right, bro? Our little treasure actually smiled! I can’t remember the last time he smiled! What did Selena write?”
Saul tried to peek at the note, but Rick immediately covered it like a protective baby.
Still, Saul caught a glimpse and thought: How could such a simple message make Rick so happy? Selena is really something special!
Daniel said nothing but looked at his son with soft eyes.
After Rick woke up, Daniel took him home immediately and put all company affairs aside to stay by his side.
…
At night, No. 8 Platinum Emperor Palace.
The vast living room was silent.
Two figures — one big, one small — sat facing each other at the dining table, both as cold as the night.
Daniel said, “Eat.”
Rick ignored him.
Daniel repeated firmly, “This is the last time I’ll say it.”
Little Treasure stayed still.
Daniel said, “Do you really think childish threats like hunger strikes will work on me?”
Rick sat like a meditating monk, completely absorbed in his own world, without any reaction.
Father and son stared each other down.
After an hour, Daniel called Saul. “Send me Selena’s address.”
Turns out, hunger strikes do work.
Saul quickly sent Selena’s exact address to Daniel’s phone, along with a bunch of gossip, which Daniel ignored.
Without another word, Daniel stood, grabbed his jacket and keys.
The moment Rick saw this, he followed his father step by step.
Daniel glanced down at his son’s small feet, then leaned over and hugged him helplessly. “This isn’t the first time.”
After returning from the audition building, Selena took a good night’s rest. Later, she went to the supermarket to buy hot pot base, side dishes, and some beer.
The first battle was won—time to celebrate with a hot pot at home!
Eating hot pot alone was the ultimate form of loneliness…
But Selena was used to being alone.
Just as the soup pot was about to be served, a knock sounded at the door.
Who could it be at this hour?
Selena opened the door cautiously—and froze.
Standing there was Daniel, dressed in a neat suit and black overcoat, holding the little bun in his arms. The boy was clutching a colorful fruit basket.
What kind of strange sight was this?
“Mr. Lu?” Selena swallowed nervously. “Why are you here… so late? Is something wrong?”
“Visiting,” Daniel said curtly.
Visiting? In the middle of the night? Why didn’t he just come by himself—and bring the little bun along? After all, Selena had just fallen and hurt herself…
“Uh, Mr. Lu, please come in! I’m sorry, the place is a bit messy…” Selena hurriedly stepped aside and invited them in, scrambling to tidy up. She shoved some clothes under the bed to hide the mess.
“Make yourself comfortable. What would you like to drink? Tea or milk?”
Selena racked her brain trying to guess the reason for Daniel’s visit, but his expression was unreadable—too deep and cold.
“Yes,” Daniel replied simply, like a soldier acknowledging an order.
Selena made him a cup of tea and brought Rick some milk.
Daniel took a seat on the living room sofa with his long limbs stretched out; Rick sat silently beside him.
Father and son—not only did they look identical, but their faces mirrored each other’s expressionless calm.
Neither spoke.
The silence was ice-cold.
Selena sat across from them, nearly on the verge of tears.
What on earth were these two doing here?
Just then, the pot bubbled softly, and the spicy aroma began to fill the air.
Trying to break the silence, Selena said casually, “Have you had dinner yet? I’m about to eat hot pot—would you like to join me?”
Daniel replied simply, “Okay.”
The little bun nodded.
Selena blinked.
She was only being polite—why were they making such a fuss?
Here was the big boss and the young master—who had surely never tasted anything but the finest food—coming to eat a humble homemade hot pot with her?
Selena felt a bit helpless but had already invited them over, so she set two extra bowls and chopsticks.
“The seasoning I bought is pretty spicy—can you handle spicy food?” she asked, concerned.
Daniel answered, “Yes.”
Rick nodded eagerly.
Alright then…
Selena brought over the washed side dishes.
Daniel didn’t eat much; most of the time he helped with cooking. Rick, however, enjoyed the spicy food just as much as Selena.
Eventually, Selena worried aloud, “Is it okay for kids to eat so much spicy food? I don’t want anything to happen to this little prince.”
“He’s not so delicate,” Daniel said simply.
Selena nodded, unable to argue.
After a moment, the usually silent Daniel finally spoke up, “How was the audition?”
Selena was caught off guard but answered, “It went well. That’s why I made hot pot today—to celebrate!”
Daniel raised his glass, “Congratulations.”
Selena never expected the first congratulations she’d receive would come from Daniel.
The beer in Selena’s hand lightly tapped Daniel’s glass, and she smiled genuinely, “Thank you!”
At that moment, Daniel gave a faint, almost imperceptible shake of his head.
Selena turned her gaze to Rick and said warmly, “I really have to thank Rick this time. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have made it to the audition on time. Come on, little guy, I’ll toast to you!”
Little Treasure glanced from his own milk to Selena’s and Daniel’s beer with a hesitant expression. Finally, he picked up his milk, gently touched Selena’s hand, and gulped down the rest.
Selena couldn’t help but chuckle at his serious demeanor. Did he even know what all these feelings meant?
As Daniel stepped out to the balcony to take a call, Selena quickly moved to Rick’s side and handed him her beer. “Hey, curious about the taste? Take a sip while your dad’s away—but just one sip!”
Rick’s eyes sparkled like stars as he carefully took a small sip.
Though the taste was far from pleasant, the boy looked genuinely happy.
When Daniel returned from his call, Selena quickly sat upright and acted as if nothing had happened.
Rick, ever the professional, sipped his milk slowly without a hint of unusual behavior.
Daniel didn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary as he settled back down, though a trace of warmth faded from his usually cold eyes.
The three of them made a good team. Selena had bought plenty of vegetables, and everything was eaten.
Just as Selena was wondering if it was time for them to leave, a sudden flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed by the deep rumble of thunder. Outside the window, strong winds began to howl.
“I checked the weather forecast earlier,” Selena said with a slight headache, “They’re saying there might be heavy rain and a typhoon tonight…”
Little Treasure looked at Selena, then Daniel’s gaze shifted to her.
Caught under the watchful eyes of one big and one small, Selena could only say, “It’s late and the weather’s bad. Mr. Lu, it might be dangerous for you to rush back with Rick. Why don’t you stay here for a while?”
Though she spoke politely out of habit, she was pretty sure Daniel would refuse.
But to her surprise…
Daniel answered, “Okay.”
The little bun nodded in agreement.
Damn, why did he agree so easily?
Daniel was just too easy to talk to!
Selena almost felt like they were expecting her to say exactly that.
It was crazy!
In the end, Daniel and Rick stayed the night.
The dorm room the company provided her wasn’t large—just a one-bedroom with a living room. Figuring out where everyone would sleep was a challenge.
“I’ll sleep in the living room tonight. Mr. Lu, you can sleep in my room with Rick. I’ll go change the sheets,” Selena offered.
“No, I’ll sleep in the living room. You and Rick sleep in the bedroom,” Daniel replied firmly, leaving no room for negotiation.
Selena felt like she’d committed a crime—treating President Lu to a cheap hot pot and then making him sleep on the couch.
If it had just been Daniel alone, even a hailstorm wouldn’t have kept her from sending him home, especially if he’d said no during the day. But with little bun here, the situation was different.
It was too dangerous for them to brave the storm outside. And a little bun wasn’t exactly an orphan, right?
Selena resigned herself to fate. “I’ll see if I can find some clothes for you to change into…”
After rummaging through boxes and cabinets for a while, she actually managed to find something suitable.
There was a set of Pikachu-shaped children’s pajamas that Selena had kept from her part-time job days—it was easier for Daniel, as her brother had left some clothes with her.
After recognizing her biological parents, Selena felt a deep sense of guilt toward her adoptive parents and was ashamed to face them, so she rarely contacted them anymore. She only kept in touch with her younger brother, Tang Nuo.
Having found clothes for Daniel, Selena went to the bedroom to get a fresh quilt and pillow for him.
The sofa in the living room wasn’t long enough for Daniel’s tall frame, so she had to drag a stool over to extend the makeshift bed.
Little Treasure was blissfully carefree. After showering by himself, he put on his cute pajamas and laid down on the bed without any fuss.
Selena changed into a modest two-piece pajama set after her shower, then stepped out once she was sure she looked presentable.
“Well then… Mr. Lu, I’m going to bed first. Call me if you need anything.”
“Yeah.” Daniel’s gaze briefly lingered on Selena as she stepped out of the bathroom—her hair tied up in a simple bun, wearing the most ordinary pajamas, without a trace of makeup. Her smooth skin still held a natural rosy glow from the steam.
She had clearly taken care not to draw unnecessary attention, and yet—
Daniel’s heart twisted in a way he couldn’t quite explain as he noticed an unexpected stir within himself.
…
After Selena entered the bedroom, she was greeted by a small figure sprawled on her bed, wearing an expression that hinted he was in no mood to sleep.
Since last night, so many things had unfolded beyond her expectations.
“Go to sleep,” she said softly as she lay down next to Rick, turning off the overhead light and leaving a bedside lamp glowing.
The little bun blinked up at her but showed no sign of drifting off.
Selena sighed, feeling the familiar headache creeping in.
It seemed she was expected to tell stories to coax the child to sleep…
With a helpless shrug, she said, “I don’t know how to tell stories… How about I sing you a song instead?”
Rick nodded eagerly.
Selena patted his back gently and began singing softly:
“Half cold, half warm autumn,
Ironing by your side,
Quietly watching the streamer fly,
Red leaves in the wind
Arouse the heart,
Between half-drunk and half-awake,
Hold back the smile,
Just let me be like snow in the clouds,
Gently kiss the face with ice,
Bring out waves of lingering,
How much love is left in the world,
Welcoming the floating life and thousand changes…”
She stumbled, realizing the next line was “do happy things with a lover…”
Uh-oh—maybe not the best lyrics for a child.
“Hey, Auntie won’t sing that one anymore. Auntie will sing another song!” she said quickly.
Rick nodded, looking hopeful.
Scrambling for a safer option, Selena switched to a nursery rhyme:
“There’s a little frog in the happy pond,
Dancing like he’s possessed by a prince,
His cool eyes brighter than any frog’s,
One day he’ll be awakened by the princess,
I believe the miracle is in me,
And I will grow with confidence with you…”
After singing Little Leaping Frog three times, the soft sound of steady breathing finally came from Rick’s side.
Having kids wasn’t easy.
Suddenly, she felt a surge of admiration for Daniel as a single father.
Who was Rick’s mother, she wondered? Why hadn’t she stayed with Daniel after giving birth?
Was it because the Lu family refused to accept her due to her low status? Or was there some complicated secret between her and Daniel?
Lost in these swirling thoughts, Selena slowly drifted to sleep.
But just past midnight, she was jolted awake by muffled noises coming from the living room…
Rick was sleeping soundly, so Selena quietly slipped out of bed to see what was going on.
Pushing open the bedroom door, she saw Daniel standing by the kitchen counter, pouring water. One hand pressed lightly against his stomach, his face pale and tight.
“Mr. Lu, are you alright?” Selena hurried over.
“No problem,” he said curtly.
“You have a stomachache, don’t you?”
Daniel remained silent.
Selena sighed inwardly. Of course—Daniel couldn’t handle spicy food. Why else would he be like this?
“Wait, I’ll get you some stomach medicine.”
Fortunately, Selena always kept a small medicine kit at home. She quickly retrieved some pills and handed them to him.
“Take these.”
Daniel took the pills from her hand. Their fingertips brushed lightly for a moment—a crisp, electric sensation that somehow felt like a spark right at her heart.
On this stormy, rainy night, under a pale moon and in the dead of night, with such a beauty before him... it was dangerously easy for Daniel’s usually cold composure to falter.
Selena silently recited pi in her head to calm herself.
Watching Daniel swallow the medicine, she hesitated to leave and decided to stay by his side a little longer.
“Feeling better? Do you want me to take you to the hospital? I’m sorry—I didn’t know you couldn’t eat spicy food.”
Originally, she had been worried about Rick, but now it seemed the problem was with Daniel instead. What a strange turn of events.
“No need,” Daniel said shortly.
A brief silence stretched between them before Daniel spoke again.
“The reason I came here tonight is because Rick wants to see you.”
Selena blinked in surprise. “Rick wants to see me?”
“He was frightened in the warehouse. You saved him, and now he relies on you,” Daniel explained softly.
Selena noticed that whenever Daniel mentioned Rick or was near him, his usual icy aura softened considerably. The fearsome man from earlier in the day was replaced by something far gentler.
“So that’s why…” Selena nodded slowly.
The quiet intimacy of the night made it easier for her to ask a question she’d been curious about.
“Tell me, does Rick know how to talk?”
She hadn’t heard a single word from the boy so far; he only nodded or shook his head.
“It’s not that he can’t speak—he just doesn’t want to,” Daniel answered honestly.
“A psychological block?” Selena frowned.
“Yes.”
That matched what she had suspected. But she didn’t dare ask about the traumatic incident behind it—some secret from the depths of such a wealthy family.
“Miss Ning,” Daniel suddenly fixed her with a steady gaze. His eyes were cold and clear—but somehow felt burning hot, making her heart skip.
“Huh?” Selena blinked, caught off guard.
“Have we met before?” he asked quietly.
If anyone else had said that, she might have assumed it was just a casual line to strike up conversation. But with Daniel, the confusion in his eyes seemed genuine.
“Probably not, Mr. Lu. If I’d met someone like you, I’m sure I wouldn’t forget,” she said confidently. Given their worlds, it was nearly impossible for them to have crossed paths before.
Daniel looked away, his eyes reflecting the dark night beyond the window, a lonely look in them.
The atmosphere suddenly felt heavy, awkward.
“Mr. Lu, if you’re feeling better, I think I’ll go to bed now,” Selena said cautiously.
As if seeing through her hesitation, Daniel raised a hand.
“No hurry. Sit down.”
“No hurry?” Selena thought to herself. I’m the one in a hurry! But she obeyed and stayed seated, the night stretching quietly between them.
Selena sat down obediently, her posture as stiff and proper as a primary school student’s, a mournful expression on her face.
Daniel tilted his head slightly. “Are you afraid of me?”
Compared to his cold indifference during the day, Daniel in the dead of night seemed darker, more dangerous — like a predator watching its prey.
Selena shook her head quickly, then nodded uncertainly. “Is there anyone in the entire Imperial City who isn’t afraid of you?”
Daniel’s slender fingers traced the rim of his glass as he spoke quietly, “So, because others fear me, you’re afraid too? Then why, if other women want to marry me, don’t you?”
Selena nearly fell off her chair at the question, heart pounding.
She’d thought she’d dodged a disaster earlier, but this... this was a thousand-times worse.
“How am I supposed to answer that?” she stammered, raising her trembling hand. “Before I do, can I ask you something?”
Daniel nodded, expression unreadable. “Go ahead.”
“Why me? Is it just because Rick depends on me? I think it’s only temporary — he’ll be fine once his mood stabilizes. Even if he doesn’t, you don’t have to... you don’t have to tie yourself down for me...” Selena’s voice was gentle, trying to reason as if calming a frightened child.
Daniel set down his glass, his gaze locking onto hers. “Miss Ning, I thought I’d made myself clear from the start. But if you don’t understand, I’ll say it again: Because you saved Rick, I’ve decided to repay you with my body.”
Is that why I’m so blind I can’t accept it? Selena wanted to scream inwardly.
Realizing there was no reasoning with him, she softened her voice and said, “Mr. Lu, thank you for your kindness. But actually, I don’t believe in marriage…”
Daniel raised an eyebrow. “So, you want to sleep with me, but not marry me?”
“That’s not—no, no! I didn’t mean that!” Selena almost collapsed on her knees, panic rising. “Don’t talk like that!”
“I’m afraid I only accept sex if it’s within marriage,” Daniel said flatly.
Selena muttered under her breath, Who’d believe that? —thinking about how he’d practically implied pregnancy before marriage was off limits.
Daniel looked out the window, his voice distant. “Rick was an accident. I don’t know who his mother is.”
That sounded almost... scoundrel-like.
Then Daniel asked suddenly, “Do you mind that I have a son?”
Selena was taken aback. How could I mind? Everyone in the capital wanted to be Rick’s stepmother. It should be her privilege.
“Why would I?” she answered.
Daniel’s tone held a quiet insistence, as if tonight he wouldn’t let her off the hook without an answer.
Selena rubbed her forehead helplessly, then took a deep breath. “Mr. Lu, marriage isn’t a game. Whether it’s for repayment or anything else, we’ve just met. Do you really know me? Do you know my past?”
“I want to marry you as you are now. Your past doesn’t matter to me,” Daniel replied with the commanding certainty she expected.
Selena’s face hardened, voice cold and steady. “But for me, my past is part of who I am. I can’t just strip it away and marry you. Mr. Lu, we want different things. I sincerely suggest you drop that ridiculous idea.”
The room fell silent, heavy and thick.
Selena braced herself, expecting anger or rage at rejection.
Instead, Daniel’s voice was calm, almost resigned. “I see.”
Her nerves finally loosened. “Then I’ll go to sleep. Good night.”
“Good night.”
Daniel watched her retreating back, his gaze deep as the ocean — but beneath it, the burning heat of the seabed remained unchanged.
The next morning, Selena was roused by a deep voice coming from the living room.
Hearing footsteps approaching, Daniel put down his phone and asked softly, “Did I wake you?”
Selena blinked at the man in front of her, her eyes wide like copper bells.
Daniel wasn’t wearing a shirt. When he opened the bedroom door, his bare chest and pale skin caught her completely off guard.
She instinctively touched her nose, grateful she wasn’t embarrassed.
Daniel seemed unfazed by her strange gaze. Calmly, he grabbed his shirt off the sofa and began buttoning it up. “The company has an urgent matter. I have to go. Please wake Rick.”
“Oh, yes!” Selena hurried off to find Rick.
Before she could call out, she turned and saw a small figure blocking the bedroom doorway — Rick, clad in soft, Pikachu-shaped pajamas, staring intently at his father with a very displeased expression.
“Little Treasure, go change,” Daniel ordered, slipping on his coat.
The response? The bedroom door slammed shut with a loud bang.
Daniel and Selena exchanged silent looks.
Daniel tried the door handle, but it was locked from the inside. He glanced at Selena. “Do you have the key?”
Selena shook her head sheepishly. “Yes... but it’s inside the room too.”
Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose and said coldly, “I’ll give you three minutes. If you don’t come out by then, you won’t want to come back here in the future.”
Three minutes passed in silence.
“Come out! If I have to force you, I won’t be so easy to talk to,” Daniel warned.
Still nothing.
The stubborn little bun wasn’t giving his father any face.
Selena watched, trying not to laugh. “I have work later, otherwise I’d let Rick stay and play for a bit.”
Daniel’s face darkened. He pulled out his phone and made a call.
Peeking, Selena realized he was calling a psychiatrist. Is that really necessary for this? she thought, speechless.
Clearing her throat, she offered, “Want me to try?”
Daniel hesitated, then nodded.
Pressing her ear to the door, Selena spoke softly, “Rick, Auntie has to go to work soon and can’t look after you. Why don’t you go home with Dad first?”
No response.
“How about we exchange phone numbers so we can keep in touch? We can even do video calls!”
A hesitant shuffle came from inside.
“If Auntie is late, the leader will scold me. Our leader is terrible... Auntie is so pitiful…”
With a click, the door opened.
Surprise flashed across Daniel’s eyes—he’d been ready for a long battle.
He then looked at Selena with a complicated expression.
Just three words, and Rick obediently came out.
Last time Rick locked himself in the attic balcony, it took the whole family, housekeeper, psychiatrist, and even a negotiator to get him out. The door was removed, and he ignored everyone for a month after.
Selena, unaware of this history, picked up the downcast little bun, who couldn’t bear to be scolded, and praised, “Rick, you’re so good! Thank you, baby!”
Rick’s mood lifted slightly. Silently, he handed her a note with a string of numbers written neatly on it.
Selena smiled, “Hey, is this your phone number? Okay, I’ll save it and call you when I’m done!”
Daniel was puzzled — Rick didn’t have a phone. Where did he get this number?
Leaning over, he peeked at the note. It was his own mobile number.
Yes, this really is my son!
Star Entertainment
In the office, Janice glared angrily. “Selena auditioned for the second female lead!”
“Second female lead?” Susie frowned. “Didn’t she just play some minor role in a crew nobody even knows about? How does she even have time to audition for the second lead?”
“I was surprised too,” Janice admitted, “but after asking around, I found out it was actually for the first female lead role yesterday. The judges were about to leave when they accidentally saw Selena hanging around. They thought she was perfect for the second female lead role and immediately cast her. No wonder you’re so wary of her — Selena’s really scheming. Even after the audition was over, she lingered around the judges, trying to cozy up to whoever she thought could help her!”
There were things Janice didn’t dare to say: Selena’s appearance was a killer weapon, and it was no surprise the judges were instantly taken by her.
Janice had planned to sign Selena and focus on training her, but Susie suddenly soared in popularity.
One was a rookie with zero influence, the other a popular artist with a powerful family background. Everyone knew who the company would pick. In this industry, looks alone don’t cut it.
Susie scowled, “Even if it’s not the first female lead, this is a huge production!”
Her tone made it clear she didn’t want Selena to get the part.
Janice shifted awkwardly. “It’s going to be tricky. The company invested heavily in this drama. The boss was thrilled that both the first and second female leads were signed with our company. It would be great if Selena could be replaced by someone better, but she failed the last audition, so there’s no reason to replace her now…”
Susie, uncertain of what to think, suddenly calmed down. She stroked her manicured nails and sneered, “Forget it. If she’s eager to play the vixen, let her have it! That wicked female concubine causing trouble for the country? She’s perfect for that role!”
….
Soon, Selena received a call from Janice confirming her role as the second female lead in The World and urging her to prepare well.
In the drama The World , the first female lead is wise and brave, helping the male protagonist ascend the throne. The second female lead, meanwhile, is a scheming, sinister woman, eventually pushed off a cliff by the first female lead—a very satisfying comeuppance.
With such a character setup, it was no wonder Susie was so generous this time and didn’t spoil her.
….
Even after landing the second female lead in The World , Selena still had to finish her current work. Today’s scene was a five-minute sequence where she plays a mistress stealing a husband, surrounded and beaten violently by a group around Big Sun.
What should have taken five minutes stretched into over two hours. The extras were inexperienced, their timing and expressions all over the place, forcing multiple retakes.
Exhausted, Selena went home and collapsed on the sofa, turning on the TV.
After a moment, she felt like she’d forgotten something.
At that moment, the news played on the screen, showing a familiar figure.
This flourishing beauty. Broad shoulders, narrow hips, long legs, an aura of cold elegance at 8,000 meters altitude... it was none other than Daniel, Rick’s father.
Daniel was shaking hands with several foreigners during a signing ceremony.
The host excitedly introduced Lu Group’s partnership with an Italian luxury brand to enter the European market, potentially doubling their market value.
Selena suddenly remembered—she hadn’t called Rick!

Platinum Palace
The Lu family elders had just returned from abroad, and the family of five was gathered for dinner.
The big deal the Lu Corporation had been negotiating for three years was finally settled. Mr. Lu was delighted, praising Daniel highly and even commending Saul.
But that was the gist of it.
Work was important, yes—but his precious grandson was even more so.
Grandpa Lu said, “Daniel, work is important, but don’t neglect Rick. Your recent projects are done; spend more time with your son!”
Mrs. Lu added, “If you really don’t have time, find someone to help care for him! Rick’s growing up; you should think about your personal life too!”
Mr. Lu chimed in, “Your mother is right!”
Saul winked at Daniel, thinking, Here we go again—parents playing the double reed.
Daniel lowered his head to his meal, silent.
Lu Rick held the phone, motionless.
Mrs. Lu’s heart sank as she looked at the two wooden stakes at the table—one big, one small. “Daniel, did you hear what I said? And what’s wrong with Rick? He hasn’t eaten a single bite all night, just clutching that mobile phone like a baby!”
Saul was chewing on sweet and sour pork ribs and mumbled through a mouthful, “Rick’s waiting for a call from that pretty auntie.”
Mrs. Lu blinked, puzzled. “What pretty auntie?”
Saul waved dismissively. “Oh, parents, don’t worry. My brother already has someone he likes!”
Mrs. Lu’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Is what you’re saying true? Second son, don’t lie to us!”
At that moment, Old Master Lu put down his chopsticks with a grave expression and gave Saul a probing look.
